How to Become a BCBA
The complete 2026 guide to becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Education, fieldwork, exam prep, costs, timeline, and career outlook. From first step to certification.
7 Steps to BCBA Certification
Earn a Bachelor's Degree
Complete a bachelor's degree from an accredited university. Any major qualifies, but psychology, education, special education, and social work are common choices that provide relevant foundational knowledge. Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher for competitive graduate school admission.
If you already have a bachelor's degree in any field, you can proceed directly to Step 2 or Step 3.
Gain Experience as an RBT (Recommended)
While not required, working as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) before or during graduate school is strongly recommended. RBT certification requires a high school diploma, a 40-hour training course, a competency assessment, and ongoing supervision by a BCBA.
Working as an RBT gives you hands-on clinical experience implementing ABA programs, helps you understand the work you will eventually supervise as a BCBA, and confirms that this career is right for you. Many graduate programs value RBT experience in admissions decisions.
RBT Training Resources →Complete a Qualifying Master's Program (with an ABAI Verified Course Sequence)
Enroll in a master's program that includes an ABAI Verified Course Sequence (VCS). The Verified Course Sequence (VCS) requires 315 classroom hours covering behavior analysis content areas. Programs are available in behavior analysis, psychology, education, or related fields.
Online and hybrid programs are accepted by the BACB and are popular among working professionals. Tuition ranges from $15,000 to $50,000+ depending on the university. Many employers offer tuition reimbursement for employees pursuing BCBA certification.
Verify your program is listed on the BACB Verified Course Sequence directory before enrolling.
Complete 1,500 Supervised Fieldwork Hours
Accumulate at least 1,500 hours of supervised fieldwork experience (or 1,000 hours in a concentrated fieldwork model). Fieldwork must be supervised by a qualified BCBA and must include:
- Conducting behavioral assessments
- Developing and implementing behavior intervention plans
- Collecting and analyzing data
- Supervising direct service staff
- Collaborating with families and other professionals
Most students complete fieldwork during their master's program by working at ABA agencies, clinics, or schools while taking classes.
Pass the BCBA Certification Exam
Apply to the BACB ($245 application fee) and register for the BCBA exam ($295 exam fee). The exam is a 160-question, multiple-choice test covering 8 content areas:
- Philosophical Underpinnings
- Concepts and Principles
- Measurement, Data Display, and Interpretation
- Experimental Design
- Ethics
- Behavior Assessment
- Behavior Change Procedures
- Personnel Supervision and Management
The first-attempt pass rate is approximately 60-65%. Structured study plans, practice exams, and study groups improve your chances significantly.
Obtain State Licensure
Many states require BCBAs to hold a state license in addition to BACB certification. Requirements vary, but typically include submitting your BCBA certificate, passing a background check, and paying a state licensing fee ($100-500). Some states have additional requirements.
Check with your state's licensing board for specific requirements before you start practicing.
Maintain Your Certification with CEUs
BCBAs must complete 32 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) every 2-year cycle, including at least 4 in ethics and 3 in supervision. Starting July 1, 2026, asynchronous CE must include participation-monitoring checks (at least 3 knowledge-check questions per CEU) — not a video/interactive-only mandate.
Special Learning's CE Library provides all 32 required CEUs for $199/year, including ethics and supervision. Build Your Own ($299/year) gives unlimited access to the full catalog.
