ComApp.3: A Road to Better Speech and Hearing

May is Better Speech and Hearing Month through ASHA, which means a month-long spotlight on the various professionals who strive for better speech and hearing outcomes for individuals with speech and hearing difficulties across the country. It goes without saying that speech and language pathologists may have a long and steady climb to make with an individual who has speech and hearing difficulties. These individuals may not have hearing or speech at all, making it that much more challenging to meet their varying needs. At Special Learning, we have taken into account the need for a basic communication resource to meet the needs of individuals who may not otherwise have a voice to communicate themselves.

According to the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (2012), Augmentative and Alternative Communication, commonly referred to as AAC, includes all types of communication excluding speech that are used to express a person’s thoughts, needs, wants and ideas. Individuals that suffer from severe speech and language problems often rely on AAC to either supplement speech that is already in their repertoire or to replace speech that is not functional.

In the age of mobile and tablet devices, communication has become more accessible to individuals who otherwise would not have affordable means to express themselves. It’s specifically for this reason that Special Learning has created a robust, yet simple AAC app that harnesses all of the basic language an individual needs to effectively communicate their basic wants and needs.  The third version of our Communicating Basic Needs app (ComApp.3) provides a fun, easy-to-use interface that allows individuals to express what they want and need on a daily basis. The best thing about this app is how much personalization is available right from the device itself!  Take pictures and record voices to use on the app in the moment!

In support of providing a better future for individuals with speech and hearing difficulties, Special Learning is pleased to extend an amazing discount on this app through the entire month. Journey to Independence

Community-based program designed to support families on waitlist

Being an RBT for me was extremely fun because where were you going to find a place where you can be completely silly without having to worry what people thought about you? This was the only job that made me feel like I could make a dramatic difference while being myself.

I also liked to be surrounded by people that had the same goals of wanting to help kids and the teamwork made the job much easier and more enjoyable.

Change and progress was the ultimate goal for our kiddos. The early intervention program was seriously only a miracle because I saw changes in the kiddos that from day one, you wouldn’t even recognize who they were.

Changes from being able to utter 3-4 words where they can only make a syllable from when they started, the behavior decreases in which kiddo that used to engage in 30-40 0 self-harm to only half, learning how to wait during games, table work where they use to swipe and drop to the floor if they had to.

My favorite was when the parents would tell us what amazing progress they were making at home. I used to tear up and felt for these parents so much because it was already difficult for them and now, they can trust and rely on ABA and the therapists knowing their goal was ours.
