Special Learning, Inc. Launches “Social Stories” App

This innovative new app, set to be released in August, provides an easily accessible way of teaching various common rules and social norms to children with developmental disabilities, thus allowing them to function more effectively in everyday social settings.

Social stories are short, illustrated books designed to help children cope in common social settings by creating a better understanding of how to behave appropriately in a given social situation. The goal of Social Stories is to provide a written and visual roadmap of how to handle everyday social events that a child might face which may otherwise cause stress, anxiety or discomfort. By learning how to respond and act more closely with rules generally accepted in society, children with ASD will improve their social skills and integrate more successfully with peers.

The Social Stories app for iPad is a way of providing the story using a more interactive and engaging format. Vivid and colorful illustrations paired with clear written storylines told from the student’s perspective make this app a fun and enjoyable way to achieve social readiness. The student will be able to easily navigate the flip-book app with a touch of the screen. The app is equipped with customizable voice options that allow the user to choose a voice for narration from four possibilities: boy, girl, man or woman. Using an app format that works on commonly used devices allows for the child to blend into their social settings while having easy access to the teaching resource.

As part of the Social Stories series, Special Learning is launching five titles:

• Saying Thank You
• Saying Good-bye
• Asking for Help
• Trying When It’s Hard
• Saying Hi

Each social story is available for $4.99. This app will soon be available for Android platform users as well, specifically for users of the Samsung Galaxy Tablet and Kindle Fire. Using the app in conjunction with the downloadable Social Stories series, which includes the full story, coloring book and rule cards, makes it a perfect learning kit.
