A leading provider of educational products and tools, Special Learning’s Social Stories are short, illustrated books that help teach “rules” and social norms that children with ASD need to know to allow them to function in specific social settings.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 26, 2012

Special Learning, Inc., the leading global provider of mobile applications and educational resources for those affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), today announced the launch of its new downloadable educational book series called “Social Stories.” Social Stories are short, illustrated books that help teach children affected by autism to learn specific social “rules” or “norms” that are generally accepted in society to allow them to communicate effectively. Examples of subjects include saying “hello” and “goodbye,” and “asking for help.”

The Social Stories book series is available as PDF downloads from the website. The books will be available in downloadable e-Reader formats for Kindle, Kindle Fire, Nook and iPads in July 2012.

Social Stories are written from the perspective of the student and outline a set of “rules” that should be followed in variety of social settings to help individuals navigate situations that might otherwise prove difficult or cause them discomfort. The goal of Social Stories is to prepare students to address common situations by understanding how to appropriately respond by offering repetitive examples for specific situations encountered.

The Social Stories series of books and educational flashcards help teach communal skills through the use of precise and sequential information about everyday events a child may find difficult or confusing, preventing additional anxiety on the part of your child.

As part of the Social Stories series, Special Learning is making several titles available, including “Asking for Help,” “Saying Hi,” “Saying Goodbye,” “Saying Thank You,” and “Trying When It’s Hard.” Additional titles are planned.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that social stories are a very effective means of teaching social skills to a certain population of students with ASD. Specifically, researchers, healthcare professionals and parents will find value in the Social Stories series as an educational tool to foster proper development of communication skill in those affected by autism.

Each Special Learning Social Stories book set comes with a set of flashcards that the students can carry with them. These flashcards correspond to every page of the book to help reinforce key messages of the story. Each story also includes a classification key that allows users to easily identify the age-appropriate book that is most relevant to address a particular learning situation.
Each Social Stories set includes:

  •     Colored books in two sizes: 11 x 8.5 and 5.5 x 8.5
  •     Black and white books in two sizes: 11 x 8.5 and 5.5 x 8.5
  •     Flashcards

The price of each Special Learning Social Stories book set is $9.99.

Being an RBT for me was extremely fun because where were you going to find a place where you can be completely silly without having to worry what people thought about you? This was the only job that made me feel like I could make a dramatic difference while being myself.

I also liked to be surrounded by people that had the same goals of wanting to help kids and the teamwork made the job much easier and more enjoyable.

Change and progress was the ultimate goal for our kiddos. The early intervention program was seriously only a miracle because I saw changes in the kiddos that from day one, you wouldn’t even recognize who they were.

Changes from being able to utter 3-4 words where they can only make a syllable from when they started, the behavior decreases in which kiddo that used to engage in 30-40 0 self-harm to only half, learning how to wait during games, table work where they use to swipe and drop to the floor if they had to.

My favorite was when the parents would tell us what amazing progress they were making at home. I used to tear up and felt for these parents so much because it was already difficult for them and now, they can trust and rely on ABA and the therapists knowing their goal was ours.
