ABA Credential Pathways
Applied Behavior Analysis has a structured credential ladder managed by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). Each tier has its own requirements, supervision expectations, and continuing development obligations.
Important: Each credential level also has specific maintenance obligations. Earning the credential is step one — sustaining it requires ongoing professional development. The sections below break down exactly what each credential requires.
What Each Credential Authorizes
RBT
- Implements behavior-analytic services under close, ongoing supervision
- Does NOT design, modify, or interpret behavior intervention programs independently
- Must maintain an active, BACB-registered supervisor throughout practice
- Annual renewal + 12 PDUs every 2 years
BCaBA
- Designs and oversees behavior-analytic programs under BCBA supervision
- May supervise RBTs (within BACB supervision standards)
- Can serve as an independent practitioner in some state licensing frameworks
- 32 CEUs every 2 years including ethics
BCBA / BCBA-D
- Independent practice — designs, implements, and evaluates behavior-analytic programs
- Authorized to supervise RBTs and BCaBAs
- BCBA-D designation recognizes doctoral-level education

RBT Professional Development: Deep-Dive
As an RBT, your professional development focuses on deepening your clinical skills and staying current with behavior-analytic practices. The BACB introduced a formal PDU requirement to support this growth.
Effective 2026-01-01: RBTs are now required to complete 12 Professional Development Units (PDUs) in every 2-year cycle. Your first PDU cycle deadline is January 2028. Even if you renewed your RBT credential recently, your PDU clock started January 1, 2026.
What Counts as a PDU?
The BACB publishes specific criteria for what activities qualify as PDUs. Common eligible formats include:
- Trainings and workshops aligned to the RBT Task List (2nd ed.)
- Webinars and online modules covering RBT-relevant skills
- Supervisor-led training activities documented through your BACB account
- Conferences and seminars relevant to behavior analysis practice
Language matters: RBTs earn PDUs, not CEUs. "CE" and "CEU" are terms used for BCBA/BCaBA continuing education. If you see content advertised as "CE for RBTs," clarify whether it meets BACB PDU eligibility before enrolling — and verify directly with the BACB or your supervisor.
Tracking Your PDUs
Keep documentation for every PDU activity you complete. The BACB may request supporting records, so create a simple log including:
- Activity title and provider
- Date completed and duration
- Number of PDUs claimed
- Certificate of completion or attendance record
Planning Your 12 PDUs Across the 2-Year Cycle
Spreading your PDUs is easier than cramming. With 12 PDUs due by January 2028, consider completing 2–3 PDUs every 6 months — that's roughly one short training activity per quarter.
Months 1–6
- Identify your skill gaps using the RBT Task List
- Complete 2–3 PDUs in foundational or core areas
- Review documentation requirements with your supervisor
Months 7–12
- Complete 2–3 PDUs in an area your supervisor recommends
- Attend a webinar or training on ethical practice
- Confirm PDU credits and log in your tracker
Months 13–24
- Complete remaining PDUs to reach 12 total
- Focus on areas tied to your client population or setting
- Submit required documentation before your deadline

BCBAs and BCaBAs operate on a 2-year continuing education cycle. Staying current isn't just a licensing obligation — it's how you stay effective for the clients and teams you serve.
The 32-CEU Requirement
Every BCBA and BCaBA must earn 32 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) per 2-year renewal cycle. These must come from ACE-approved Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) activities offered by a BACB ACE Provider.

Supervisor tip: If you supervise RBTs or BCaBAs, the 3 supervision CEUs are required — not optional. These must be in a supervision topic as defined by the BACB. Satisfy this requirement early in your cycle so you're not scrambling at renewal.
Accepted CEU Formats
The BACB accepts a variety of ACE-approved formats. Common options include:
- Online self-paced courses from BACB ACE Providers — flexible and convenient
- Live webinars with real-time participation and knowledge checks
- In-person workshops and conferences
- Journal article reviews (specific BACB criteria apply)
- Mentored independent fieldwork (check BACB for current accepted categories)
Distributing Your CEUs Strategically
Don't leave all 32 CEUs to the last three months. A sustainable approach over 24 months:
Early Cycle (Months 1–8)
- Knock out your 4 ethics CEUs — this content evolves and front-loading keeps you grounded
- Complete supervision CEUs if you supervise
- 10–12 CEUs total early
Mid Cycle (Months 9–16)
- Deepen a clinical area relevant to your current caseload
- Explore an adjacent area (AAC, parent training, organizational behavior management)
- 10–12 CEUs mid-cycle
Late Cycle (Months 17–24)
- Fill remaining CEU count with emerging research or specialty areas
- Review your BACB account to confirm category requirements are met
- 8–12 CEUs to close out the cycle
Choosing ACE Providers
Only BACB ACE Providers can issue CEUs that count toward your renewal. When evaluating a provider or course, confirm:
- The organization is listed as a BACB ACE Provider
- The specific course is ACE-approved (not all courses from an ACE provider are necessarily approved)
- The CEU count and category (ethics, supervision, general) are clearly stated
- A completion certificate is issued for your records

How to Choose Quality CE and PD
Not all professional development is equal. With hundreds of providers offering ABA content, here's a practical framework for evaluating what's worth your time and money.
Verify ACE Provider status directly on the BACB website — not just the provider's own marketing. Look for the ACE Provider number.
Does this course address a real skill gap in your current practice? CEUs are most valuable when they make you better at your actual work, not just satisfy a checkbox.
Look for courses that cite peer-reviewed research, reference the BACB task list or ethics code, or are taught by credentialed practitioners with relevant experience.
Good CE includes practical application — case examples, knowledge checks, or skill practice. Passive video consumption with no application rarely leads to skill transfer.
A reputable provider issues a certificate immediately on completion with your name, the course title, CEU or PDU count, and the provider's ACE number.
On-demand, self-paced options give you flexibility. Prioritize providers with a library — you'll complete more CEUs when you can learn on your schedule.
Watch out for: Courses advertising "CEUs for RBTs" — RBTs earn PDUs, and not all CEU content meets BACB PDU eligibility. If you're an RBT, confirm any training meets BACB PDU requirements before enrolling.
A Note on Ethics Content
Ethics CEUs are required for BCBAs and BCaBAs — but ethics content is valuable beyond the checkbox. The BACB Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts is updated periodically, and keeping current on ethical practice protects your clients, your supervisees, and your license. Prioritize ethics content that uses real-world scenarios, not just recitations of the code.

For RBTs — 2-Year PDU Cycle Checklist
- Identify your cycle start date and Jan 2028 first-deadline
- Review the RBT Task List (2nd ed.) — note areas where you want to grow
- Ask your supervisor which skill areas they recommend you prioritize
- Research eligible PDU activities (confirm BACB eligibility for each)
- Plan 2–3 PDU activities in the first 6 months
- Complete and document first 4 PDUs
- Complete and document PDUs 5–8 by mid-cycle
- Complete and document final 4 PDUs (total: 12) before deadline
- Confirm all documentation is saved and accessible

For BCBAs & BCaBAs — 2-Year CEU Cycle Checklist
- Note your certification expiration date — set a calendar reminder 6 months out
- Confirm whether you are a supervisor this cycle (affects supervision CEU requirement)
- Complete 4 ethics CEUs — front-load these
- Complete 3 supervision CEUs (required if you supervise)
- Plan your remaining CEUs to reach 32 total across 24 months
- Verify every course is from a BACB ACE Provider — confirm ACE approval of each course
- Log certificates as you go — do not wait until renewal
- Reach 20+ CEUs by month 16
- Reach 32 CEUs with at least 60 days before expiration
- Review BACB account to confirm all categories are satisfied
- Submit renewal application on time
