Reinstating your CCC-SLP: the PDHs ASHA asks for
If your ASHA certification has expired, the PDHs you need to reinstate it depend on how long you have been without it. Here is what ASHA's CCC-SLP reinstatement page says.
Who can reinstate
ASHA says reinstatement "may be available to eligible individuals whose ASHA certification is" expired, resigned or retired, or revoked or withheld. Expired means individuals who "have lost the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) due to nonpayment of annual certification fees and/or noncompliance with certification maintenance requirements". ASHA says: "Please don't apply until you can (1) meet all the reinstatement policies and procedures listed below and (2) submit all the required items."
The PDHs, by time without certification
ASHA says: "The number of professional development hours (PDHs) required is based on the amount of time you have not held ASHA certification."
- "1 year or less without certification = 10 PDHs completed no more than 1 year prior to submitting your application for reinstatement."
- "1–2 years without certification = 20 PDHs completed no more than 3 years prior to submitting your application for reinstatement."
- "2 years or more without certification = 30 PDHs completed no more than 3 years prior to submitting your application for reinstatement."
The activities must be "within the Scope of Practice in Speech-Language Pathology". On the application, ASHA asks you to list each activity with its "full title of the course or activity", "name of sponsoring course or activity provider", "date of completion" and "number of hours earned", and to "keep copies of all professional development documentation in case they are requested by ASHA Certification staff for your application."
The other steps
ASHA lists a reinstatement fee ("$400 for the CCC-SLP and ASHA membership" or "$371 for the CCC-SLP without ASHA membership"). "If your CCC-SLP has been expired for more than 1 year, you must provide confirmation of a passing Praxis exam score that was achieved no more than 5 years before applying for reinstatement." ASHA says to "allow 4–6 weeks for review of your completed online application and all required documentation." If your status is Not Current rather than expired, read what ASHA says about Not Current status.
After reinstatement
ASHA says: "If your certification is reinstated, you must maintain that certification by (1) abiding by the Code of Ethics", "(2) paying annual ASHA dues and/or certification fees, and (3) completing 30 PDHs during each 3-year maintenance interval." Our free ASHA certification maintenance hours planner tracks the 30 PDHs of a maintenance interval; it does not track reinstatement hours.
Special Learning is not an ASHA Approved CE Provider, and our courses are not ASHA CEUs. If you choose a recorded course, Compassionate Mandated Reporting Across Disciplines runs 110 minutes and costs $39, paid once; after you pass its quiz, its certificate shows Special Learning as the sponsoring organization, your name, the course title, the dates and the hours. You decide whether its content fits ASHA's Scope of Practice for you. We do not claim it meets ASHA's requirements for any activity. Read what ASHA says about courses from other providers.
Common questions
