ASHA CEUs and PDHs: how the units convert

ASHA counts certification maintenance in professional development hours (PDHs), while many certificates show ASHA CEUs. Here is ASHA's own conversion, so you can total your hours correctly.

What a PDH is

ASHA says "One PDH is equal to 60 minutes spent completing a professional development activity as a learner and participant." It also says certificate holders "are required to earn and report at least 30 PDHs during each 3-year certification maintenance interval".

ASHA's conversion table

On its PDH page, ASHA says: "If the credit hours you've earned are not easily converted to PDHs, use the following conversions:"

  • 0.5 PDH = 0.05 ASHA CEUs
  • 1.0 PDH = 0.1 ASHA CEUs
  • 1.5 PDHs = 0.15 ASHA CEUs
  • 10.0 PDHs = 1.0 ASHA CEUs (1 quarter hour)
  • 15.0 PDHs = 1.5 ASHA CEUs (1 semester hour)

ASHA's CE Registry FAQ describes 30 PDHs as equal to 3 ASHA CEUs. In practice, multiply ASHA CEUs by 10 to get PDHs.

Reporting partial hours

ASHA says the minimum duration accepted for a PDH is 15 minutes, and that PDHs may increase in 15-minute intervals. Check ASHA's reporting-unit guidance before converting a certificate that uses another increment. For example, our Compassionate Mandated Reporting course certificate records 1.83 hours of duration; we have not established how many PDHs ASHA would accept for it. Special Learning is not an ASHA Approved CE Provider and this course does not provide ASHA CEUs.

Convert ASHA CEUs to PDHs

Enter ASHA CEUs to multiply by 10. This is arithmetic only; the calculator does not check ASHA’s 15-minute minimum or reporting increments. Do not treat a result outside those units as reportable PDHs. Check ASHA’s current reporting guidance below. Enter up to four decimal places.

Enter your ASHA CEUs to see the equivalent PDHs.

Worked examples

  • A certificate showing 0.2 ASHA CEUs is 2 PDHs.
  • A 90-minute session is 1.5 PDHs (60 minutes per PDH).
  • One semester hour is 15 PDHs.
