Renewing an expired NCSP: what NASP requires

What you need to renew an expired NCSP depends on how long it has been expired: under 3 years, 3 to 9 years, or 10 years or more. Here is what NASP's pages say.

Terms. NCSP is the Nationally Certified School Psychologist credential from NASP, the National Association of School Psychologists. CPD is continuing professional development; EDI is equity, diversity, and inclusion; APA is the American Psychological Association. Self-study is Category H in NASP's CPD guidelines. The Praxis score NASP asks for is an official score report from ETS.

Expired less than 3 years

NASP's FAQs say: "You have up to 3 years to renew your NCSP credential without the need to submit additional documentation. You may renew online and pay the appropriate renewal and late fees." NASP's renewal page lists this path as "Renewal + Late Fee": "Submit 75 CPD hours" and "Pay applicable late fees". It says "Late fees for renewal are assessed one calendar month after the NCSP credential expires." NASP's pages list the late fee schedule.

Expired 3 to 9 years

NASP's renewal page says: "For renewals submitted 3+ years after expiration, NASP must receive an official Praxis score report (ETS code 1549). The Praxis test date must be within 10 years of renewal submission." Its FAQs add that a late renewal "includes providing an official Praxis score from ETS to NASP, and you must meet current standards."

Expired 10 years or more

NASP says: "If your NCSP has been expired 10 or more years, you must reapply through the Non-Approved/Accredited Program pathway. Renewal is not permitted after 10 years expired."

While it is expired

NASP's FAQs say: "If your NCSP has expired, you are unable to identify yourself in any manner (e.g., in reports or business cards) as holding the NCSP credential." The 75 CPD hours still apply, and NASP's FAQs note "you can only claim CPD obtained within 36 months of your renewal application."

Plan your hours

Our free NCSP renewal hours planner shows what is left in each renewal requirement and has a printable CPD log.

Special Learning is not a NASP-approved provider or an APA-approved sponsor, and our courses do not count toward the hours that must come from one. If you choose a recorded course for your self-study hours, Compassionate Mandated Reporting Across Disciplines runs 110 minutes and costs $39, paid once; after you pass its quiz, its certificate of completion shows your name, the course title, the dates and the hours. You decide whether it meets the four questions in NASP's CPD guidelines for you. We do not claim it meets the ethical/legal or EDI requirement. For hours you choose yourself, read what NASP says about providers it has not approved.
