Your Personal CE Tracking Dashboard (What the BACB Needs)
Start Here: 2-Minute CE Check
If you only do one thing today, grab your BACB account dashboard and verify these 3 numbers:
- Total CE hours completed this cycle (BACB requires 32 for BCBA, 20 for BCaBA).
- Ethics hours (BACB requires 4).
- Supervision hours if you supervise (BACB requires 3).
Write those 3 numbers on a sticky note on your monitor. That's your baseline. Everything you do this week moves those numbers forward.
You are juggling caseloads, supervision responsibilities, and your own professional development, and someone just reminded you that your BACB renewal cycle ends in 6 months. You open the BACB Gateway, see a list of completed courses, and realize you still have no clear picture of whether you are on track. You wished for a dashboard that automatically counts what you have done and shows what you still need before your deadline. You are not alone. This is the most common pain point BCBAs report when managing recertification, and the BACB does not provide an auto-tracking tool that breaks down your progress by category in real time.
The BACB requires 32 continuing education hours per 2-year cycle for BCBAs (20 for BCaBAs), including at least 4 in ethics and 3 in supervision if you hold a supervision designation. All hours must be completed through BACB-authorized CE providers, and you are responsible for tracking your own progress. The BACB Gateway shows a chronological list of completed activities, but it does not automatically tell you how many ethics hours you have banked, how many supervision hours remain, or whether your mix of courses meets all the requirements. That reconciliation is on you, and many BCBAs discover gaps only weeks before their deadline.
This guide walks you through building your own tracking system using a simple spreadsheet template, explains what the BACB counts (and what it does not), and shows you how to audit your progress every month so renewal becomes a routine task instead of a last-minute scramble.
3 Strategies to Track Your CE Progress Like a Dashboard
1. Build a 3-column CE tracker in a spreadsheet (date, activity title, category, hours).
Open a blank spreadsheet and create columns for date completed, activity title, CE type (ethics, supervision, general), and hours earned. Every time you complete a CE activity from a BACB ACE Provider, log it immediately in this tracker. At the bottom of the hours column, use a sum formula to calculate your total. Add separate sum formulas for ethics-only rows and supervision-only rows. Update this tracker the same day you finish a course, not weeks later when you have forgotten the details. This single-source-of-truth spreadsheet becomes your personal CE dashboard. Print it or pin it to a second monitor so you see your progress every time you sit down to work. When you know your running total, you eliminate the guesswork and the panic.
2. Set monthly mini-deadlines (not just one final deadline).
If your BACB renewal date is January 2027 and today is April 2026, you have 9 months. Divide your 32 required hours by 9 and you get roughly 3.5 hours per month. Block 1 calendar appointment per month labeled "CE Progress Check" and treat it like a client appointment. During that 30-minute block, open your tracker, compare your totals to your monthly target, and register for the next course you need. If you are behind, adjust next month's target up by 1 or 2 hours. Monthly tracking prevents the situation where you realize in December that you still need 18 hours and every live workshop is booked.
3. Front-load your ethics and supervision hours in the first 6 months.
Ethics and supervision hours are the 2 categories most BCBAs underestimate or forget until late in the cycle. Knock them out early. In your first 6 months, aim to complete all 4 ethics hours and all 3 supervision hours (if you supervised). That leaves only general CE hours for the second half of your cycle, which gives you maximum flexibility to pick courses on topics you actually want to learn. Many BACB-authorized providers bundle ethics courses into 4-hour packages, so you can satisfy the entire ethics requirement in 1 afternoon. Do it now, check the box, and eliminate the risk that you will scramble for a last-minute ethics webinar in month 23 of your cycle.
4. Audit your BACB Gateway transcript every 3 months and compare it to your tracker.
Log into the BACB Gateway, work through to your CE transcript, and download the CSV export. Compare the BACB's records line-by-line to your personal tracker. Occasionally CE providers submit completion data late, or a course you took does not appear on your transcript because the provider's approval lapsed. Catching these discrepancies 3 months after the course is manageable. Catching them 1 week before renewal is not. If you find a missing course, contact the provider immediately and request they resubmit your completion record to the BACB. Allow 2 weeks for processing. This quarterly audit is your safety net. It ensures that the hours you think you have are the hours the BACB recognizes.
What to Do This Week
Day 1: Log into your BACB Gateway, download your CE transcript as a CSV, and open a blank spreadsheet. Copy the activity titles, dates, and hours into your tracker.
Day 2: Add a "Category" column to your tracker and label each row as ethics, supervision, or general. Add sum formulas at the bottom for total hours, ethics hours, and supervision hours.
Day 3: Calculate how many months remain until your renewal date. Divide your remaining CE hours by the number of months. Write that monthly target on a sticky note and put it on your monitor.
Day 4: Block 1 recurring 30-minute calendar appointment per month labeled "CE Progress Check" from now until your renewal date. Set a reminder for 1 day before each appointment.
Day 5: Register for 1 ethics course or 1 supervision course (whichever you need). Complete it this week or this weekend. Log it in your tracker immediately after you finish. Watch your totals update. That is your dashboard.
If you want a head start on your CE hours with courses that automatically report to the BACB and give you immediate certificates, CE Library for Behavior Analysts includes 32 CEUs from a BACB ACE Provider (4 ethics + 3.5 supervision) for $199 one-time. You complete the courses at your own pace, pass the quiz, and the completion data flows directly to your BACB transcript within 7 days. It is a fast way to knock out your ethics and supervision requirements in 1 or 2 focused weekends, leaving the rest of your cycle free for general CE topics you choose. The library is designed for BCBAs and BCaBAs who want to front-load their cycle and eliminate renewal anxiety early.
