Earning CEUs: A Quick Start for BCBAs

You're working with 5 to 12 year old children with autism, and you know how full the days get: sessions, team meetings, parent calls, treatment plans, data reviews, supervision. The challenge is not usually motivation. Most BCBAs want to learn. The challenge is finding CEUs that are worth your time, fit your schedule, and align with what you actually need to know to serve your clients better. The strategies below will help you build a sustainable CE plan that works.

Strategy 1: Map Your 2-Year Cycle at the Start

Block out your CE plan in the first month of your renewal cycle, not the last. Open a spreadsheet or a calendar note. List your renewal date and total CEUs required (32): 4 in ethics, 3 in supervision (the BACB's 2027 requirements raise it to 4; see the 2027 renewal note below) if you supervised RBTs/BCaBAs/trainees during the cycle, and the remainder in any behavior-analytic content area, from ACE events or other BACB-listed CE routes. For a BCBA working with 5 to 12 year olds, that might mean prioritizing courses on functional communication training, school consultation, or trauma-informed care in year 1, then Ethics and Supervision refreshers in year 2.

Strategy 2: Prioritize Ethics and Supervision Early

These are the hardest to find at the last minute, especially high-quality Ethics training that goes beyond code recitation. Real ethics training explores how to apply those principles in complex situations: managing dual relationships, working through conflicts of interest, protecting client dignity when family requests conflict with clinical best practice.

Supervision CEUs (Section 4 of the Code, Responsibility to Supervisees and Trainees) are equally critical if you oversee RBTs or are training to become a supervisor. Courses that walk through the RBT competencies, performance monitoring, and providing effective feedback will serve you daily. Knock these out early so the rest of your cycle can focus on skill-building content that energizes you.

Strategy 3: Choose Courses That Solve a Current Clinical Problem

Let your caseload drive your CE choices. If you have a 7-year-old on your caseload who is struggling with peer interaction at recess, take a course on social skills training or naturalistic teaching in group settings. If you're writing a behavior intervention plan for a 10-year-old with high-magnitude aggression, take a course on functional behavior assessment or functional communication training. The best CE hours are the ones you can apply the next day.

Choose one skill you want to apply from each course, then discuss its use with your team and track the results. A course alone does not establish that an intervention will work for a particular client.

Strategy 4: Use a Catalog That Lets You Learn at Your Own Pace

On-demand courses let you earn CEUs on your schedule, not someone else's. Live webinars are valuable for Q&A and networking, but if you're working full clinical days, evening webinars after 6 pm can feel like a second shift. On-demand libraries let you pause, rewind, take notes, and return when you're focused. For a BCBA managing a school-age caseload, that might mean watching a 1-hour webinar during a cancellation gap or on a Saturday morning when your cognitive load is lighter.

Look for courses that include downloadable tools: PowerPoint slides, checklists, worksheets, or case study templates you can adapt for your own clients. That practical layer helps you move from concept to implementation without starting from scratch.

Day 1: Log into your BACB account and write down your renewal date and how many CEUs you have left to earn.

Day 2: Open a spreadsheet or calendar note and divide your remaining CEUs by months left. That's your monthly pace.
