Earning CEUs: A Quick Start for BCBAs

Earning CEUs: A Quick Start for BCBAs

Start Here: 2-Minute CE Planning Check

If you only do one thing today, do this:

  1. Open your BACB account and check your current renewal date.
  2. Count how many CEUs you have left to earn. BCBAs complete 32 CEUs per 2-year recertification cycle, including 4 in ethics and — for those who supervised RBTs/BCaBAs/trainees during the cycle — 3 in supervision.
  3. Divide remaining hours by months left. That's your monthly pace.
  4. Block 2 hours this week on your calendar to start earning.

That's it. Knowing your pace turns a vague requirement into a manageable plan.

This guide is written for:
BCBA Ages 5-12Autism
Written for Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) working with school-age children (5 to 12 years old) with autism. Based on the BACB Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts (2022), BACB 5th Edition Task List, and clinical training standards. Published by Special Learning, April 2026.

You're working with 5 to 12 year old children with autism, and you know how full the days get: sessions, team meetings, parent calls, treatment plans, data reviews, supervision. BCBAs complete 32 CEUs per 2-year recertification cycle, including 4 in ethics and — for those who supervised RBTs/BCaBAs/trainees during the cycle — 3 in supervision, and it's easy for that requirement to slip to the bottom of the list until renewal is suddenly 3 months away.

This guide gives you a practical system for earning CEUs efficiently without sacrificing the quality of your clinical work. The BACB Ethics Code (2022) requires ongoing professional development to maintain and expand competence (Code 1.03). That means CE hours are not just an administrative checkbox, they are how you stay current with evolving research, refine your supervision skills, and deepen your understanding of ethical decision-making in real-world contexts.

The challenge is not usually motivation. Most BCBAs want to learn. The challenge is finding CEUs that are worth your time, fit your schedule, and align with what you actually need to know to serve your clients better. The strategies below will help you build a sustainable CE plan that works.

Strategy 1: Map Your 2-Year Cycle at the Start

Block out your CE plan in the first month of your renewal cycle, not the last. Open a spreadsheet or a calendar note. List your renewal date and total CEUs required (32): 4 in ethics, 3 in supervision if you supervised RBTs/BCaBAs/trainees during the cycle, and the remainder in any content area from a BACB ACE Provider. Then divide by 24 months. That gives you roughly 1.3 hours per month. If you earn 2 hours per month, you finish early with a buffer for delays or missed months.

This front-end planning eliminates last-minute scrambling and lets you choose courses that match your current clinical needs instead of grabbing whatever is available in December. For a BCBA working with 5 to 12 year olds, that might mean prioritizing courses on functional communication training, school consultation, or trauma-informed care in year 1, then Ethics and Supervision refreshers in year 2.

Strategy 2: Prioritize Ethics and Supervision Early

Earn your 4 ethics CEUs — and, if you supervised during the cycle, your 3 supervision CEUs — in the first 6 months of your cycle. These are the hardest to find at the last minute, especially high-quality Ethics training that goes beyond code recitation. The BACB Ethics Code (2022) includes core principles like treating others with compassion, dignity, and respect (Core Principle 2) and practicing within scope of competence (Code 1.05). Real ethics training explores how to apply those principles in complex situations: managing dual relationships, working through conflicts of interest, protecting client dignity when family requests conflict with clinical best practice.

Supervision hours (Code 5.0) are equally critical if you oversee RBTs or are training to become a supervisor. Courses that walk through the RBT Task List, performance monitoring, and providing effective feedback will serve you daily. Knock these out early so the rest of your cycle can focus on skill-building content that energizes you.

Strategy 3: Choose Courses That Solve a Current Clinical Problem

Let your caseload drive your CE choices. If you have a 7-year-old on your caseload who is struggling with peer interaction at recess, take a course on social skills training or naturalistic teaching in group settings. If you're writing a behavior intervention plan for a 10-year-old with high-magnitude aggression, take a course on functional behavior assessment or functional communication training. The best CE hours are the ones you can apply the next day.

This approach turns CE time into immediate professional support rather than a compliance task. You'll retain more, your interventions will improve faster, and the time investment feels justified because you see the clinical payoff in your data within weeks.

Strategy 4: Use a Catalog That Lets You Learn at Your Own Pace

On-demand courses let you earn CEUs on your schedule, not someone else's. Live webinars are valuable for Q&A and networking, but if you're working full clinical days, evening webinars after 6 pm can feel like a second shift. On-demand libraries let you pause, rewind, take notes, and return when you're focused. For a BCBA managing a school-age caseload, that might mean watching a 1-hour webinar during a cancellation gap or on a Saturday morning when your cognitive load is lighter.

Look for courses that include downloadable tools: PowerPoint slides, checklists, worksheets, or case study templates you can adapt for your own clients. That practical layer helps you move from concept to implementation without starting from scratch.

What to Do This Week

Day 1: Log into your BACB account and write down your renewal date and how many CEUs you have left to earn.

Day 2: Open a spreadsheet or calendar note and divide your remaining hours by months left. That's your monthly pace.

Day 3: Block 2 hours on your calendar this month for CE. Treat it like a client session (non-negotiable).

Day 4: Pick 1 current clinical challenge on your caseload and find a course that addresses it. Start with Ethics or Supervision if you haven't completed those yet.

Day 5: Complete that first course, download the certificate, and file it in a folder labeled with your renewal date. Repeat monthly.
