For BCBA and BCaBA supervisors

A 15-minute check-in for a new behavior technician

A short agenda helps a supervisor find barriers and agree on the next learning step.

Use the time well

  1. First 3 minutes: ask, “What has been clear so far? What has felt uncertain?” Listen without treating a question as a failure.
  2. Next 5 minutes: pick one example from a practice exercise. Ask the technician to explain their reasoning; demonstrate again if needed.
  3. Next 4 minutes: identify a practical barrier: schedule, access, understanding, feedback or knowing whom to contact. Decide who will address it and when.
  4. Last 3 minutes: agree on one next practice, the support available and the next check-in.

Keep clinical details protected

Use fictional examples in a shared worksheet. Keep any actual client information only in your organization’s approved systems. Escalate safety concerns promptly through your organization’s procedures; don’t wait for the next meeting.

This agenda supplements, rather than replaces, required supervision and employer procedures.
