Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)
Jan 2026
PDU requirement started
In effect now: Since 1 January 2026 the BACB requires all RBTs to earn 12 Professional Development Units (PDUs) per 2-year certification cycle. Nothing is due in 2027. Your own 12-PDU window opens when you certify or recertify in 2026, so the deadline that applies to you runs from your own date - January 2028 is the first deadline for RBTs who recertified in 2026. This is a new requirement.
PDU Pathways
- ACE Provider courses: Courses from an ACE provider that are designated as Professional Development (PD). Note: CE-designated courses do NOT count as PDUs.
- In-service training: Training facilitated by a BCBA, BCaBA, or BCBA-D at your workplace.
- University coursework: Relevant courses from accredited universities.
Important
CE and PD are mutually exclusive per BACB rules. A course cannot offer both. The Build Your Own (BYO) Library contains CE-designated courses, which count for BCBAs but NOT for RBT PDUs.
Free Resources
For the RBT 40-Hour training course, we recommend Dan Dube's program through ABA Growth Team (partner link — Special Learning may earn a commission at no extra cost to you).
