The ABCs of Autism is an introductory English eBook for parents and caregivers, with milestone lists, older diagnostic-name discussions and an outline of professional evaluation. The original edition carries a 2011 copyright; selected pages include later notes, while much of the text and its references remain historical. Diagnosis today follows the DSM-5 (2013), which replaced the separate DSM-IV categories with one diagnosis, autism spectrum disorder. The CDC's current estimate is about 1 in 31 eight-year-olds (ADDM Network, 2022 surveillance year); the book's older figure of 1 in 110 dates from 2009.

Original edition credits: SBSA Clinical Team and Michele LaMarche. Copyright 2011 Special Learning Inc.

Edition context: Historical edition with selective later updates: the delivered PDF includes DSM-5 notes and figures labelled 2025, alongside older diagnostic discussions and references. These updates do not make the entire book a current diagnostic or treatment guide.

The book organizes developmental milestone lists from three months to five years, including communication, play and social examples. Its early-signs chapter and 'Simple Observations You Can Do At Home' section present observation lists for parents and caregivers.

Separate chapters discuss the older names Asperger's syndrome, PDD-NOS, autistic disorder and childhood disintegrative disorder; another chapter covers Rett syndrome. A statistics chapter also discusses twins and siblings, verbal skills, diagnosis timing and care costs.

The closing diagnosis chapter lists specialist and therapist roles and describes observation and interviews within an evaluation. Selected passages contain later dated notes alongside the book's 2011 first-edition copyright and references from 2001, 2010 and 2011.
