Special Learning, Inc. announces the upcoming release of the iPad version of their Communicating Basic Needs App, a tool to help individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other developmental disabilities to communicate their basic needs and wants with pictures.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) December 27, 2011

Special Learning, Inc., an online autism solutions company, today announced the upcoming release of their “Communicating Basic Needs” app for the iPad, a new and innovative way for children with Autism or any other language deficit to easily and effectively communicate their basics needs and wants.

As technology continues to innovate more ways to make life easier, technological devices continue to improve upon previous versions of its predecessors. Special Learning Inc. continues its commitment to stay ahead of the technology curve with the release of the Communicating Basic Needs App for the most advanced technological gadget of the times….. the IPad!

Also available in iTouch and iPhone versions, the Communicating Basic Needs App is a tool to help individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other developmental disabilities to communicate their basic needs and wants with pictures. The App is filled with colorful and vivid images of everyday things that a child sees around him. Keeping basic communication in mind, our team of Behavior Analysts and developers created this Communication App following best practice used in treatment to allow persons with autism, speech delay, intellectual disability, and traumatic brain injury successfully express themselves through pictures. The App focuses on five main categories of food, drinks, clothing, toys and emotions.

The convenience of having this app in a portable gadget like an iTouch, iPhone and now, the iPad is that it is readily accessible anytime, anywhere without the hassle of carrying around picture cards. It is very user-friendly that even young children with ASD can learn to use it quickly.

Special Learning’s “Communicating Basic Needs” app has several crucially important differences from other augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices on the market.

  • It is fairly simple and fun to use. The interface was designed specifically for use of children with ASD to make it easy for children to learn and use.
  • The App comes pre-loaded with hundreds of real photographs of food, drinks, clothing and toys, an extensive assortment of pictures representing 9 emotions and four common requests icons on top of each screen.
  • Using Special Learning’s Mobile Dashboard, a powerful web-interface, users can customize the app by using their own image and voice files, view and download frequency data, and manage all purchased apps from Special Learning in one central location.
  • The App contains three different photographs of every item in each of the five main categories to allow therapists to teach generalization skills to children that are ready to learn these skills.

Through the “Settings” field in the “Admin” section, the app offers an abundance of customization features including the ability to select from four “Voice” option, five “Theme” or backgrounds, three “Picture Size” options, ability to enable or disable “Item Titles” which appear on the top of each icon, among other. Communicating with pictures has never been this fun and easy for children and even adults with skill deficiencies in communication. Special Learning Inc. continues to work hard in supporting individuals with Autism and other developmental disabilities to enable them to live more productive, meaningful and improved quality of lives.

Being an RBT for me was extremely fun because where were you going to find a place where you can be completely silly without having to worry what people thought about you? This was the only job that made me feel like I could make a dramatic difference while being myself.

I also liked to be surrounded by people that had the same goals of wanting to help kids and the teamwork made the job much easier and more enjoyable.

Change and progress was the ultimate goal for our kiddos. The early intervention program was seriously only a miracle because I saw changes in the kiddos that from day one, you wouldn’t even recognize who they were.

Changes from being able to utter 3-4 words where they can only make a syllable from when they started, the behavior decreases in which kiddo that used to engage in 30-40 0 self-harm to only half, learning how to wait during games, table work where they use to swipe and drop to the floor if they had to.

My favorite was when the parents would tell us what amazing progress they were making at home. I used to tear up and felt for these parents so much because it was already difficult for them and now, they can trust and rely on ABA and the therapists knowing their goal was ours.
