Illinois ABA staff requirements, with sources
This page is for people who run an ABA team in Illinois. It lists the training, supervision and credential rules for behavior technicians and analysts that we found at a state source. Each rule shows the law or policy it comes from and the date we last checked Illinois. Where we couldn't confirm a rule, we say so instead of guessing.
This version covers U.S. states. If you're outside the U.S., email contact@special-learning.com with your country and we'll tell you when yours is ready.

What the state requires
Beginning 24 months after the Department commenced issuing licenses (i.e., 2027-01-15), no business organization may provide behavior analysis services unless every member, partner, shareholder, director, officer, other owner, agent, and employee who renders applied behavior analysis services holds a currently valid license under the Act -- and this section expressly overrides the exclusion that today lets an unlicensed individual implement a treatment plan under a licensed behavior analyst's supervision.

Illinois' licensure structure has only two tiers, both above the RBT level: an assistant behavior analyst requires a bachelor's-level program graduate in behavior analysis or a related field, plus supervised work experience and a passed exam; a (full) licensed behavior analyst requires a graduate degree plus 500 supervised hours. There is no license tier a high-school-diploma-plus-40-hour RBT-level technician can hold, and neither the Act nor 68 Ill. Adm. Code Part 1376 (amended eff. 6/5/2025) creates a technician pathway.

The trigger date for the ยง150 employment-licensure requirement is 2027-01-15, confirmed at IDFPR, which states it commenced licensing behavior analysts and assistant behavior analysts on 2025-01-15 (24 months prior).
What changed recently
225 ILCS 6/150.1, an ownership exemption for public schools, districts, charter schools and 501(c)(3) nonprofits, took effect 2026-07-24 (P.A. 104-618) -- newer than the 2026-05-29 baseline -- and, unlike neighboring sections of the Act, carries no 2028 sunset clause.
