Kansas ABA staff requirements, with sources

This page is for people who run an ABA team in Kansas. It lists the training, supervision and credential rules for behavior technicians and analysts that we found at a state source. Each rule shows the law or policy it comes from and the date we last checked Kansas. Where we couldn't confirm a rule, we say so instead of guessing.

This version covers U.S. states. If you're outside the U.S., email contact@special-learning.com with your country and we'll tell you when yours is ready.

What the state requires

  • For the IIS (Intensive Individual Supports) technician tier, a person must hold RBT certification OR a letter from the named KDADS HCBS Autism Waiver Program Manager/HCBS Director confirming they met alternative requirements: age 18+, high school diploma or equivalent, 40 hours of applied behavior analysis training, 8 hours of supervised intervention work, 3 hours of ethics, and at least one hour each in criterion-referenced assessment, social-skills training, parent training, and program development, plus successful completion of an initial competency assessment. This is a state-authored alternative pathway to RBT, not an addition on top of it.

  • IIS applicants must also show a clean background across five registries: the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), Adult Protective Services, Child Protective Services, the Nurse Aide Registry, and a Motor Vehicle screen.

  • The clinical tier (CCTS / Autism Specialist Services) requires a certificate showing the individual is a BCBA, BCBA-D, or BCaBA, OR a letter signed by the named KDADS official for an individual with a master's degree (preferably in Human Services or Education), documented ASD experience, and completion of a State Approved Training Curriculum -- currently occupied by the KCART training (Kansas Center for Autism Research and Training, University of Kansas), a dynamic reference to whatever curriculum the state currently approves.
