Maine ABA staff requirements, with sources

This page is for people who run an ABA team in Maine. It lists the training, supervision and credential rules for behavior technicians and analysts that we found at a state source. Each rule shows the law or policy it comes from and the date we last checked Maine. Where we couldn't confirm a rule, we say so instead of guessing.

This version covers U.S. states. If you're outside the U.S., email contact@special-learning.com with your country and we'll tell you when yours is ready.

What the state requires

  • All direct care staff must be 18 or older, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and not be annotated on the Certified Nursing Assistant and Direct Care Worker Registry.

  • Adaptive Skills Training staff must have BHP certification at time of hire, or begin BHP training within 30 days of hire and obtain BHP certification within 6 months of hire (the baseline's figure of one year is superseded -- the current rule halved the deadline to six months). ABA staff may instead have RBT certification through the BACB at the time of hire.

  • Direct care staff without full BHP certification who were employed as of April 28, 2026, and who were hired no earlier than April 30, 2025, must obtain full BHP certification by October 29, 2026, or within one year of their hire date, whichever occurs first.

  • Direct care staff who provide 20 or more hours of direct service per week must receive at least 4 hours of supervision per month; those providing fewer than 20 hours receive a prorated amount with a minimum of 1 hour of supervision per month. Supervisors of ABA staff must be a BCBA or a licensed psychologist with training and/or experience in behavior-analytic principles.

What changed recently

Maine's rule was rewritten and renamed (Ch. II §28, rule title amended 2026-05-21 to update terminology; now titled 'Adaptive Behavior Services for Children' and ABA-specific), replacing a generic children's-rehabilitative-support rule that a legal mirror (Cornell) still served at HTTP 200. The BHP certification deadline was halved from one year to six months, and RBT certification became an accepted alternative for ABA staff.
