North Carolina ABA staff requirements, with sources

This page is for people who run an ABA team in North Carolina. It lists the training, supervision and credential rules for behavior technicians and analysts that we found at a state source. Each rule shows the law or policy it comes from and the date we last checked North Carolina. Where we couldn't confirm a rule, we say so instead of guessing.

This version covers U.S. states. If you're outside the U.S., email contact@special-learning.com with your country and we'll tell you when yours is ready.

What the state requires

  • To be eligible to provide Medicaid RB-BHT (ASD) services, behavior technicians must be certified either by the BACB as a Registered Behavior Technician, or by the Qualified Applied Behavior Analysis Credentialing Board (QABA) as an Applied Behavior Analysis Technician (ABAT).

  • A behavior technician must obtain and provide evidence of the required certification within 120 calendar days from the individual's date of hire, or the date the employing provider first enrolls as a Medicaid provider, whichever is later. The technician may render RB-BHT services during those 120 days under required supervision, but must cease rendering services if not certified within the 120 days.

  • For the broader RB-BHT paraprofessional tier (outside the ABA-specific rule that requires RBT/ABAT certification), a paraprofessional must complete competency-based RB-BHT training for persons with ASD that is equivalent to the minimum hour requirements of the BACB's lowest-level (Technician) tier -- without needing the BACB's credential itself. The two tiers coexist in the same policy and must not be collapsed into one rule.
