Overview

Being able to ask for what you want and need is a powerful skill — and without it, quality of life can suffer. Many individuals with limited functional communication lack the important skill of manding: requesting one's own desires and needs. Being able to vocally mand is highly desirable, however, it is not the only way to communicate. American Sign Language, modified sign language, picture exchange systems, and augmentative communication are all forms of communication. While mand training is similar across modalities, there are unique needs when developing a mand training intervention program for each communication modality.

This 120-minute recorded webcast reviews the literature on assessing and determining appropriate communication modalities, provides a task analysis for each type of communication modality, highlights video examples of communicating across modalities, and discusses the pros and cons across various communication modalities.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify and select from 5 communication modalities based on consumer needs
  • Conduct a task analysis related to the communication needs of individuals
  • Design an intervention plan to increase functional communication
