Overview
How can behavioral observations help a team have a clearer conversation? In this recorded discussion, Deborah P. Coehlo and Manya C. Ralkowski connect ABC records, caregiver interviews and teaching examples with communication among families, schools and medical professionals.
What the workshop discusses
- ABC records: describing what happened before a behavior, the observable behavior and what happened immediately afterward. The discussion also covers making a scatter plot readable by adding the activities happening at those times.
- Caregiver and team interviews: gathering information about when a behavior occurs, when it does not and what is working in successful parts of the day.
- Teaching examples: first–then schedules, ways to initiate attention, responding to directions and accepting a different available choice. The speakers discuss the tools rather than read every step of each protocol.
- Screening and school transitions: a discussion of screening versus diagnosis, parent conversations and the differences between medical diagnosis and educational eligibility.
- Multidisciplinary communication: organizing baseline observations, goals and time-of-day patterns for discussion with the family, school and prescribing clinician. A medical consultation is distinguished from a request for a prescription.
- Adolescent and adult services: participant questions about transition resources, job skills, hygiene and social skills, including acknowledged gaps in locally available services.
This is a recorded discussion of clinical applications and tools, including historical screening and medication examples. It does not establish a diagnosis, medication choice or intervention plan for an individual. Medical decisions remain with the person's qualified medical professional.
