Overview

What follows a functional behavior assessment? In this recorded training, Christine Austin explains how assessment findings guide a behavior support plan, with Michele LaMarche introducing the session. The discussion covers prevention, replacement skills, reinforcement and the review needed before a plan is implemented.

What the recording covers

  • From assessment to a plan: reviewing antecedents, behavior and consequences; stating the hypothesized function; and using the same data measure before and during intervention.
  • The behavior support plan: defining behavior, documenting strengths and communication needs, reviewing previous interventions, and involving the implementation team.
  • Prevention and replacement skills: choices, schedules, environmental changes and functional communication, selected in relation to attention, access, escape or automatic reinforcement.
  • Reinforcement: differential reinforcement of alternative, incompatible and other behavior (DRA, DRI and DRO), token systems, and checking whether a procedure is being implemented as intended.
  • Consequence procedures: extinction defined by the behavior's function, planned ignoring with safety monitoring, response cost alongside reinforcement, and non-exclusionary time-out for attention or access functions. The presenter explains why time-out can reinforce escape-maintained behavior.
  • Review and implementation: informed guardian consent, team training, governing-body review and decisions based on ongoing data.

This is a foundational review of the presenter's recorded approach. The slides carry a 2012 copyright. Experienced practitioners may find the material introductory. It includes discussion of extinction, response cost, time-out and other restrictive procedures; it does not provide an individual intervention plan or replace current professional standards, supervision or required approvals.

much of the information provided is classic examples and basic information that BCBAs have already received training on. For professional development I would expect something more.
