Understanding ABC Data Collection

What Is the ABC Model?

The ABC model (Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence) is the foundation of functional behavior analysis. Every behavior occurs in a context: something happens before it (the antecedent), the behavior occurs, and something happens after it (the consequence). By systematically recording these three elements across multiple incidents, patterns emerge that reveal why the behavior is occurring.

The Four Functions of Behavior

In ABA, all behavior serves one or more of four functions:

  • Attention: The behavior results in social attention (even negative attention like scolding)
  • Escape/Avoidance: The behavior results in removal of a demand, task, or unpleasant situation
  • Access to Tangibles: The behavior results in gaining a preferred item or activity
  • Sensory/Automatic: The behavior produces internal sensory stimulation independent of external consequences

ABC data helps identify which function is maintaining a specific behavior, which directly informs what intervention will be effective.

Tips for Accurate ABC Data Collection

  • Record as soon as possible after the incident (memory fades quickly)
  • Be specific and objective: describe what you saw and heard, not what you think the person was feeling
  • Include the immediate antecedent, not background events from hours earlier
  • Record the actual consequence, not what you planned to do
  • Collect at least 10-15 entries before looking for patterns
  • Share your data with the BCBA to inform the formal functional assessment

Frequently Asked Questions

ABC stands for Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence. It is a structured observation method used in ABA to record what happens before, during, and after a behavior. This data reveals patterns that explain why behaviors occur.

Yes. Parents are often the best ABC data collectors because they observe behavior across the most settings and times of day. Use the quick-select buttons to speed up data entry and share your log with your child's BCBA.

Aim for at least 10-15 entries before drawing conclusions. The pattern analysis feature will start identifying trends once you have 3 or more entries, but more data produces more reliable patterns.

Yes. All data is stored locally in your browser using localStorage. Nothing is sent to any server. Export to CSV if you want a permanent copy before clearing your browser data.
