NCSP renewal: the 3 hours in equity, diversity, and inclusion

Every NCSP renewal includes 3 CPD hours in equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) / social justice. Here is what NASP says about the requirement, what may count, and who decides.

The requirement

NASP's renewal page says: "Effective July 1, 2024: All NCSP renewals must include 3 CPD hours in equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) / social justice. These hours count toward the required 75 CPD total." NASP's FAQs add: "This is an ongoing requirement. The requirement must be met for each 3-year renewal of the NCSP, beginning with submissions for NCSP renewal in July 2024."

No extra hours

NASP's FAQs ask whether this means more than 75 hours, and answer: "No. The renewal still requires a total of 75 hours (or more). A minimum of 3 hours will be required in EDI, and a minimum of 3 hours is required in ethics/legal regulation in school psychology. The remaining 69+ hours can be in any topic area relevant to your practice."

What may count

NASP says: "Key topics for this area may include social justice; implicit bias; dealing with over/under representation of different cultural, racial, immigration status, sexual orientation, and gender identity in school practices; policies to mitigate bias; microaggressions; and culturally responsive assessment to name a few." Asked whether EDI hours must come from a NASP-approved provider, NASP answers: "No. This requirement can be met from any category in the CPD Guidelines."

Who decides what counts

NASP says: "NASP does not designate sessions as meeting the EDI requirements. This is left to your judgment based on the CPD guidelines and your own reflection on the learning and growth that took place as a result of the session." See also the 3 ethics and legal hours.

Plan your hours

Our free NCSP renewal hours planner shows what is left in each renewal requirement and has a printable CPD log.

Special Learning is not a NASP-approved provider or an APA-approved sponsor, and our courses do not count toward the hours that must come from one. If you choose a recorded course for your self-study hours, Compassionate Mandated Reporting Across Disciplines runs 110 minutes and costs $39, paid once; after you pass its quiz, its certificate of completion shows your name, the course title, the dates and the hours. You decide whether it meets the four questions in NASP's CPD guidelines for you. We do not claim it meets the ethical/legal or EDI requirement. For hours you choose yourself, read what NASP says about providers it has not approved.
