NCSP renewal: the 3 hours in ethics and legal regulation
Every NCSP renewal includes at least 3 CPD hours on ethical practice and/or the legal regulation of school psychology. Here is what NASP says counts, and who decides.
The requirement
NASP's renewal page lists "At least 3 hours of CPD regarding ethical practice and/or the legal regulation of school psychology, which may be met with any appropriate CPD activity category." These hours are part of the 75: NASP's FAQs say "The renewal still requires a total of 75 hours (or more). A minimum of 3 hours will be required in EDI, and a minimum of 3 hours is required in ethics/legal regulation in school psychology."
What legal regulation means
NASP's FAQs say: "Legal regulation of school psychology refers to IDEA, NCLB, Section 504, and similar issues."
Who decides what counts
NASP says: "NASP does not designate sessions as meeting the ethical and legal requirements. This is left to your judgment based on the CPD guidelines and your own reflection on the learning and growth that took place as a result of the session. If the activity does not provide you with formal CPD documentation, you may use the Activity Documentation Form."
One activity, more than one requirement
NASP's FAQs say a single activity can meet more than one requirement: "You could, for example, attend a 3-hour workshop on ethical problem-solving around social justice issues in schools, which could meet both the ethical practice/legal regulations requirement and the equity, diversity, and inclusion requirement." Plan your hours
Our free NCSP renewal hours planner shows what is left in each renewal requirement and has a printable CPD log.
Special Learning is not a NASP-approved provider or an APA-approved sponsor, and our courses do not count toward the hours that must come from one. If you choose a recorded course for your self-study hours, Compassionate Mandated Reporting Across Disciplines runs 110 minutes and costs $39, paid once; after you pass its quiz, its certificate of completion shows your name, the course title, the dates and the hours. You decide whether it meets the four questions in NASP's CPD guidelines for you. We do not claim it meets the ethical/legal or EDI requirement. For hours you choose yourself, read what NASP says about providers it has not approved.
