BACB Leaving the UK: What It Means and What to Do Next
A complete guide for UK-based behavior analysts affected by the BACB's withdrawal from the United Kingdom. Your certification options, timeline, and practical next steps.
1. What Is Happening with the BACB in the UK?
The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) has announced its withdrawal from the United Kingdom, effective January 2026. This decision affects every UK-based professional who holds or is pursuing a BCBA, BCaBA, or RBT certification through the BACB.
The BACB announced its change in international focus in 2019, effective 2023, and in its own words "Residents in the United Kingdom (UK) were subsequently granted a 3-year extension (through 2025)." It says it "has allocated resources ... to assist a number of national behavior analysis associations ... in developing their professional infrastructure, including new local certification programs" (BACB newsletter, July 2024).
For UK behavior analysts, this means the global standard credential you trained for and earned is shifting to a locally governed system. That sounds disruptive, and it is. But it also presents an opportunity: the UK now has the chance to develop certification standards that reflect the specific regulatory, healthcare, and educational context of the country.
Important: Your clinical skills and training are not diminished by this change. You are the same qualified professional you were before. This is a credentialing shift, not a competency question. The transition requires paperwork and planning, not retraining.
The change affects UK-based BACB certificants. It also impacts students currently enrolled in what were ABAI Verified Course Sequences (VCS) at UK universities, supervisees accumulating fieldwork hours, and employers who use BACB credentials as hiring requirements. ABAI discontinued its Verified Course Sequence system on 1 January 2026; BCBA and BCaBA coursework is now confirmed by the institution's own BACB Pathway 2 Program Contact. A VCS Coordinator Coursework Attestation already on record as of 31 December 2025 may be used until 31 December 2026, when the coursework requirements change.

2. Key Dates and Timeline
The BACB withdrawal is not a single event but a phased process. Here are the critical dates UK behavior analysts need to track.

3. Your Certification Options
You are not without choices. Here are the three primary pathways available to UK-based behavior analysts after the BACB withdrawal.
Option A: UK-SBA (UK Society for Behaviour Analysis)
The BACB says the UK Society for Behaviour Analysis (UK-SBA) is working to achieve national recognition. UK-SBA said in July 2025 (FAQs for UK-SBA Certifications) that BCBA and BCBA-D holders based in the UK who were UK-SBA members "will be grandfathered to UKBA(cert) status until December 2025. After 1 January 2026, candidates who possess a BCBA/BCBA-D qualification must be supervised by a current UKBA(cert) to demonstrate practice competencies." It also said "there is no UKBA(cert) exam" and that "it will not be possible to bridge between the BACB and UKBA(cert) supervision standards." A transitional arrangement runs to 31 December 2027 for those who began BACB Pathway 1 or 2 study before or during the 2022 academic year, and BCaBAs map to the aUKBA(cert) on the same dates. Ask UK-SBA for the current routes.

Option B: IBAO (International Behavior Analysis Organization)
The International Behavior Analysis Organization provides an international certification pathway for behavior analysts. It offers an independent international credential.

Best for: UK behavior analysts who work internationally, consult with clients in multiple countries, provide telehealth services across borders, or want an international credential.
Option C: Keep Your BACB Certification
If you became certified before 1 January 2026, the BACB says you may continue to recertify. Keep your CEUs current and recertify on your usual cycle.
Our recommendation: If you are already certified, keep your BACB certification current; the BACB says you may continue to recertify. Ask UK-SBA what it offers, and ask your employer and funder what they will accept. If you work in more than one country, compare IBAO too.
4. What About Your CEUs?
One of the most common concerns for UK behavior analysts during this transition is whether the continuing education units (CEUs) they have already earned will transfer to the new certification framework.
Here is what we know:
- Ask UK-SBA which CEUs it will count. CEUs you earn from BACB ACE providers stay on your BACB record, and Special Learning has been a BACB Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) provider (Provider #OP-14-2437). Whether UK-SBA counts them toward its own framework is its decision.
- Keep all your CE certificates and records. Whether your CEUs were completed through webinars, courses, conferences, or self-study, maintain documentation of everything. During transitions, having complete records makes every application smoother.
- Continue earning CEUs through recognized providers. Do not pause your professional development during the transition. CEUs from BACB ACE providers count toward your BACB recertification.
BACB CE requirements for BCBAs: 32 CEUs per 2-year certification cycle, including 4 Ethics CEUs and 3 Supervision CEUs under the current BACB handbook; the BACB's 2027 requirements raise it to 4 and do not say which cycles that covers, for those who supervise (our CE Library carries 3.5). Keep meeting them if you are recertifying with the BACB.
