For behavior technician supervisors

Practice a clear session handoff

Help a new technician separate observed facts, questions and follow-up in a fictional handoff.

A short, fictional exercise for a supervisor and new technician to discuss together. This does not replace required training, supervision, assessment or an individualized plan.

Sort the information

Practice facts: a fictional learner chose a puzzle, worked for six minutes, said “all done,” and then chose to stop. A planned material was unavailable. The trainee wants to know where to find the replacement material next time.

Which details are observations, and which item needs follow-up?

Show a possible handoff

Observed: chose a puzzle, worked for six minutes, said “all done,” then chose to stop. Context: the planned material was unavailable. Question: where is the replacement material? Next step: ask the supervisor before the next session.

Use it with staff

  1. Ask the trainee to give the handoff aloud, then identify any assumptions or missing information.
  2. Identify the responsible person and when the question needs an answer. Escalate urgent safety concerns through the organization’s procedures without waiting for a routine handoff.
  3. Use the organization’s approved channels for actual client information; do not enter names or identifying details on a public page.
