Ethics CEU Quality Audit
7 Questions to Ask Before You Spend a CEU on Ethics Content
Free resource from Special Learning - BACB ACE Provider #OP-14-2437
Why This Matters
Ethics CEUs are not optional. Every BCBA renewal requires 4 CEUs in professional ethics per 2-year cycle. But not all ethics CE is equal - and with the BACB's new July 2026 format rules, some content you've relied on won't be eligible anymore.
Bad ethics CE doesn't just waste your money. It leaves you with a gap you have to fill under deadline, and it means you spent 4 hours learning nothing you can apply on Monday.
Here's how to audit any ethics course before you commit.
The 7-Question Audit
Question 1: Is it actually approved by the BACB?
The BACB requires ethics CEUs to be from BACB-authorized CE providers (ACEs). Look for the ACE provider number on the course materials. If you don't see one, the hours may not be accepted.
Special Learning's ACE Provider number: #OP-14-2437
✅ What to look for: "BACB ACE Provider" + provider number displayed on course page and certificate
Question 2: Is the content grounded in the BACB Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts (2022)?
The 2022 Ethics Code is the current binding standard for BCBAs. Content referencing the 2016 or 2020 code is outdated. Some providers haven't updated their material.
✅ What to look for: Explicit citation of "BACB Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts (2022, updated March 2025)"
⚠️ Red flag: Citation says "BACB Professional and Ethical Compliance Code (2016)" or any version prior to 2022
Question 3: Does it teach you what to DO - not just what the rules say?
The most common complaint from BCBAs about ethics CE: "It just read me the code I already know." Ethics CEUs should move you from awareness to application - what do you actually do when you face a dual-relationship scenario, a client with competing interests, a supervisor who crosses a line?
✅ What to look for: Case-based scenarios, decision-making frameworks, "what would you do" exercises
⚠️ Red flag: Course is 90% code recitation with a brief quiz at the end
Question 4: Will it still be eligible after July 1, 2026?
Starting July 2026, the BACB requires all CE (including ethics) to meet interactive video + assessment standards: minimum 3 questions per CEU, video-based instruction. Article-and-quiz formats are no longer eligible.
✅ What to look for: Video instruction + embedded assessment with ≥3 questions per CEU of content
⚠️ Red flag: PDF + quiz format, no video component, or pre-recorded audio only
Question 5: Is the instructor credentialed?
CE from a BACB ACE Provider requires instruction from BCBA-credentialed presenters (or doctoral equivalent). Guest speakers from adjacent fields (psychologists, attorneys, ethicists) can contribute, but behavior analyst authorship must be present.
✅ What to look for: Instructor credentials listed (BCBA, BCBA-D) and verifiable on BACB's registry
Question 6: Does it cover restricted ethics areas you actually need?
The BACB requires at least 4 ethics CEUs per cycle, but smart planning targets the areas where you're most likely to face real dilemmas:
- Multiple relationships and conflicts of interest
- Supervisory responsibility and RBT oversight
- Cultural responsiveness and client dignity
- Social media and public statements
- Research ethics and publication
If your ethics CE only covers one area (e.g., all supervision, no dual relationships), you may be leaving gaps in your actual ethical practice - even with the box checked.
✅ What to look for: Course menu that covers multiple domains across the ethics code
Question 7: Will you get a certificate you can actually produce on audit?
The BACB conducts audits. When audited, you need proof: a certificate of completion that includes your name, the provider's ACE number, the course name, the CEU count, and the date of completion.
✅ What to look for: Completion certificate with all five elements above
⚠️ Red flag: "You can download a certificate" with no provider number, or only a course-completion badge
