For the first time, RBTs have a recurring professional-development requirement. Here is the path from certification through renewal — and what's new.
The path
1Initial training. Complete the 40-hour RBT training and the required competency assessment.
2Certification. Pass the RBT exam and receive your credential.
3Annual renewal & ongoing supervision. Maintain the supervision required by the BACB.
42-year recertification — NEW. Complete 12 PDUs every 2-year cycle.
RBTs earn PDUs, not CEUs. Professional Development Units (PDUs) are the RBT requirement; Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are the BCBA/BCaBA requirement. They are separate and not interchangeable — a BCBA CE Library is not a source of RBT PDUs.
What's new: the 12-PDU cycle
- Live since January 1, 2026. Every RBT now completes 12 PDUs per 2-year recertification cycle — the first-ever recurring PD requirement for RBTs.
- First deadline: your own recertification date in 2028, two years after you certify or recertify in 2026. There is nothing due in 2027 — the smart move is to start banking PDUs now.
- Three recognized pathways for earning PDUs: (1) ACE events, (2) in-service training by a qualified BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D, and (3) university coursework.
- Self-paced PDUs include knowledge checks — a minimum of 3 questions per PDU.
- PDU content cannot duplicate the competencies from your initial RBT training.
