Before you choose

Additional requirements, including mandated reporting and first aid, must be met separately. APA credit is not offered with this purchase. Pennsylvania IBHS restrictions apply to any restrictive procedures discussed in the recordings. Historical examples are not instructions for using restricted procedures in Pennsylvania; follow current state requirements and your agency’s authorized training plan.

See the Pennsylvania requirements for restrictive procedures.

Some recordings in this collection mention APA continuing-education credit. That credit is not available: Special Learning is not an APA-approved sponsor today. The credit for each session is only what this page lists.

Recorded initial-training topics for Pennsylvania BHTs and behavior technicians. Review the sessions and remaining requirements with your agency.

Start your 7-day free trial - watch a session before you buy. New here? Choose Register on the next screen: your account is created on the spot, with no verification email to wait for, and you land straight on the trial.

Seventeen recorded sessions built around the topics the Pennsylvania syllabus names for a new BHT or behavior technician: what the job is, how behavior is assessed and taught, ethics, working with families, and the day-to-day of an IBHS case. $99 for 6 months of access. A new hire can start the same afternoon and finish on their own schedule.

For agencies. Put every new technician through the same training, on the same day they sign, and keep the certificates in one place. Pass each session's quiz and submit its evaluation, then request its available certificate. Every session comes with its downloadable slide deck for your own onboarding.

Try it free for 7 days. Open it, watch, and decide before anyone pays.

Pennsylvania DHS's published IBHS training approval process lists training offered by a BACB Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) provider as already considered approved by the Department. Special Learning is a BACB ACE provider (OP-14-2437). Your agency confirms which completed sessions and documented clock hours fit your role and staff training plan. This library does not by itself establish completion of the full initial-training requirement; review the topic limits below. Obtain CPSL mandated-reporting and first-aid training from the providers specified in the DHS process.

PA IBHS

Initial BHT/BT Training

This training course is for practitioners who work as BHTs, Behavior Techs, RBT®s, etc. who have limited to no experience working with individuals with developmental, mental and other disabilities (to include ASD).

What this training covers, and what it does not

55 Pa. Code § 5240.73(c) requires a BHT with no prior BHT experience to complete at least 30 hours of Department-approved training that includes eight specified topics, before providing services independently.

This course does NOT cover these § 5240.73(c) topics. You must obtain them separately:

  • Crisis intervention skills, including risk management, de-escalation techniques and safety planning — § 5240.73(c)(2)
  • Child and adolescent development — § 5240.73(c)(4). The included “Introduction to Human Development” module does not satisfy this requirement.
  • Serious emotional disturbance — § 5240.73(c)(5). The included “Introduction to Developmental and Mental Health Diagnoses” module does not satisfy this requirement.
  • Child Protective Services Law and mandated reporting — § 5240.73(c)(1). Act 31 Online Training is provided by the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work (3 hours): https://www.socialwork.pitt.edu/researchtraining/child-welfare-programs/act-31-line-training
  • First aid, universal precautions and safety — § 5240.73(c)(7)

We do not hold your training records with the Department, and we cannot tell you whether you have met § 5240.73(c). Please check the full text of the regulation and your own records.

Whether your agency accepts this training toward § 5240.73(c) is determined by your agency under § 5240.13(c). Please confirm with them.
