How Token Boards Work
The Basics
A token board is a visual system where a child earns tokens (stars, stickers, checkmarks) for demonstrating a specific behavior. When all token slots are filled, the child earns a predetermined reward. Token boards are one of the most effective and widely used reinforcement strategies in Applied Behavior Analysis.
Why Token Boards Are Effective
- Visual: The child can see their progress toward the reward
- Immediate: Tokens can be delivered instantly after the target behavior
- Bridge: They connect immediate reinforcement (token) with a larger delayed reward
- Flexible: The reward can be changed to maintain motivation
- Generalized: Tokens become conditioned reinforcers that work across settings
Tips for Success
- Start with fewer tokens (3-5) and increase gradually
- Deliver tokens immediately after the target behavior
- Be specific about what earns a token: "You earned a star for raising your hand!"
- Let the child choose their reward from a menu of 2-3 options
- Pair token delivery with verbal praise
- If the child is not earning tokens, the criteria may be too high. Adjust.
- Laminate the printed board and use Velcro tokens for reuse
