How to Become an RBT
Plan your path to Registered Behavior Technician certification in 2026: check the requirements, compare provider costs and arrange training, assessment and the exam. No college degree required.
What is an RBT?
A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a paraprofessional who works directly with children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, implementing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy programs designed by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). RBTs are the frontline providers of ABA therapy, spending more time with clients than any other member of the treatment team.
RBT certification is an entry point into supervised behavior-technician work helping people with autism learn, grow and build independence. It requires no college degree; the steps below explain what to arrange before applying.

6 Steps to RBT Certification
Meet the Basic Requirements
Applicants must be at least 18 and have a high school-level education or equivalent. Check the BACB's current residency, criminal-background and abuse-registry requirements before applying.
Complete 40-Hour Training
Complete a 40-hour RBT training course that meets the BACB requirements. Confirm that your course meets the BACB's 2026 training requirements. Common areas of study include:
- Measurement: How to collect and record behavioral data
- Assessment: Assisting with preference assessments and skill assessments
- Skill Acquisition: Teaching new skills using ABA techniques
- Behavior Reduction: Implementing behavior intervention plans
- Documentation and Reporting: Session notes and data sheets
- Professional Conduct and Scope: Ethics, boundaries, and supervision
Training can be completed in person or online. Many ABA agencies provide and pay for the 40-hour training as part of their new employee onboarding.
Choosing your 40-hour training: Check the BACB's current RBT requirements and ask the provider to confirm that its course meets the 2026 curriculum. Special Learning does not offer the 40-hour course.
Pass the Competency Assessment
After completing the 40-hour training, complete the current RBT Initial Competency Assessment with an assessor who meets the BACB packet's requirements. The assessor uses the official RBT Initial Competency Assessment form to evaluate your skills in real or simulated clinical scenarios.
Arrange the assessment with an eligible assessor after training and within 90 days before applying; ask about appointment availability.
Apply to the BACB
Meet the eligibility and screening requirements before applying. Create your own BACB account, submit the required documentation and pay the $65 application fee. Allow two weeks for BACB processing; check your account for any action items. Schedule the exam after approval.
Pass the RBT Exam
Schedule your exam through Pearson VUE testing centers and pass the RBT certification exam:
- 85 multiple-choice questions
- 90-minute time limit
- $45 exam fee
- 2025 first-time pass rate: 75% (BACB)
- You receive the exam result at the testing center. Certification confirmation follows separately from the BACB; your supervisor must add you as a supervisee before your status becomes active.
Prepare using the current RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.). In 2025, 75% of first-time RBT exam candidates passed, according to the BACB. This historical group rate does not predict your result.

Maintain Your Certification
Once certified, you must:
- Receive ongoing supervision (minimum 5% of your direct service hours supervised by an eligible RBT supervisor)
- Recertify and pay the recertification fee ($50 — the Board's 2-year recertification application processing fee, in force since January 1, 2026). Certification or recertification in 2026 starts a two-year cycle. Your BACB account shows your own certification status and deadline.
- In effect now (first deadline: your recertification date in 2028): Complete 12 Professional Development Units (PDUs) per 2-year cycle across one or more of the three approved pathways

How Much Does It Cost?

Plan your budget: The BACB application costs $65 and one Pearson VUE exam appointment costs $45: $110 for those two fees only. Training, screening and the competency assessment have provider-dependent costs; extra exam attempts can add costs. Ask each provider for a current quote and your employer which expenses, if any, it pays. Recertification is a separate ongoing expense. What Do RBTs Do Every Day?
A typical day as an RBT might include:
RBTs work in homes, clinics, schools, and community settings. Many positions offer flexible schedules, which makes RBT work compatible with college classes for those pursuing advanced degrees.
Career Growth: From RBT to BCBA
RBT is not a dead-end job. It is the first step in a career with significant growth potential:
These are the requirements in force today. The BACB changes them on 1 January 2027: from that date there are two BCBA pathways instead of four. The two that remain are an accredited or recognized behavior-analysis degree program, and a master’s degree plus behavior-analytic coursework — so if you are on the coursework route, that route continues. If you want to be assessed under today’s rules you must apply — and meet all of the requirements — before 1 January 2027, so the last day to do both is 31 December 2026. The board’s own rule is that you must meet the requirements in place at the time you apply, so anyone who cannot complete every requirement and apply by that date will be assessed under the new ones. The board publishes its own Guidance for Meeting the BCBA Requirements During the 2027 Transition, and that is the thing to read before you plan around any of this. Requirements read at source from the BACB’s BCBA Handbook stamped Updated 06/2026 on 3 September 2026; the board republishes the handbooks quarterly as needed, so check the stamp on any page that tells you otherwise.
