What is an RBT?
A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a paraprofessional who works directly with children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, implementing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy programs designed by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). RBTs are the frontline providers of ABA therapy, spending more time with clients than any other member of the treatment team.
RBT is one of the fastest-growing jobs in healthcare. It requires no college degree, can be earned in as little as 2 weeks, and provides a direct entry point into a rewarding career helping people with autism learn, grow, and build independence.

6 Steps to RBT Certification
Meet the Basic Requirements
To become an RBT, you must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and be able to pass a background check. No college degree, prior experience, or specific major is required. This makes RBT one of the most accessible certifications in the healthcare field.
Complete 40-Hour Training
Complete a 40-hour RBT training course that meets the BACB requirements. The training covers the RBT Task List content areas:
- Measurement: How to collect and record behavioral data
- Assessment: Assisting with preference assessments and skill assessments
- Skill Acquisition: Teaching new skills using ABA techniques
- Behavior Reduction: Implementing behavior intervention plans
- Documentation and Reporting: Session notes and data sheets
- Professional Conduct and Scope: Ethics, boundaries, and supervision
Training can be completed in person or online. Many ABA agencies provide and pay for the 40-hour training as part of their new employee onboarding.

Pass the Competency Assessment
After completing the 40-hour training, a qualified BCBA or BCaBA must directly observe you implementing ABA procedures and verify your competency. The assessor uses the official RBT Initial Competency Assessment form to evaluate your skills in real or simulated clinical scenarios.
This is typically conducted by your employer's supervising BCBA during your first few days working with clients.
Apply to the BACB
Create an account on the BACB website, submit your application, upload your training certificate and competency assessment documentation, pay the application fee ($65), and complete the background check. Processing typically takes 1-2 weeks.
Pass the RBT Exam
Schedule your exam through Pearson VUE testing centers and pass the RBT certification exam:
- 85 multiple-choice questions
- 90-minute time limit
- $45 exam fee
- Pass rate: approximately 80%
- Results available immediately after the exam
The exam covers all content areas from the RBT Task List. Candidates who complete their 40-hour training thoroughly and review the Task List typically pass on their first attempt.

Maintain Your Certification
Once certified, you must:
- Receive ongoing supervision (minimum 5% of your direct service hours supervised by a BCBA)
- Recertify and pay the recertification fee ($50 — the Board's 2-year recertification application processing fee, in force since January 1, 2026). Your next recertification on or after January 1, 2026 is the last one on the current requirements. Completing it starts your 2-year cycle — so if you recertify in 2026, your next one is in 2028, not 2027.
- In effect now — first deadline January 2028: Complete 12 Professional Development Units (PDUs) per 2-year cycle across at least 2 of 3 approved pathways

Career Growth: From RBT to BCBA
RBT is not a dead-end job. It is the first step in a career with significant growth potential:
These are the requirements in force today. The BACB changes them on 1 January 2027: from that date there are two BCBA pathways instead of four. The two that remain are an accredited or recognized behavior-analysis degree program, and a master’s degree plus behavior-analytic coursework — so if you are on the coursework route, that route continues. If you want to be assessed under today’s rules you must apply — and meet all of the requirements — before 1 January 2027, so the last day to do both is 31 December 2026. The board’s own rule is that you must meet the requirements in place at the time you apply, so anyone who cannot complete every requirement and apply by that date will be assessed under the new ones. The board publishes its own Guidance for Meeting the BCBA Requirements During the 2027 Transition, and that is the thing to read before you plan around any of this. RBT pay is set locally - by country and region, by setting (school, clinic or in-home), by whether your hours are guaranteed or only offered, by whether drive time between clients is paid, by whether the employer pays for your 40-hour training and your exam, and by whether you are given supervision hours that count toward BCaBA or BCBA certification. Two offers at the same hourly rate can be thousands apart once those are counted, so ask about each one before you compare them.
