How to Increase Your RBT Salary
- Gain experience. The biggest pay bump comes in years 1 to 3. Moving from entry to experienced adds $4 to $7/hr in most markets.
- Specialize. RBTs who work with severe behavior, early intervention (under 3), or feeding disorders command higher rates. These cases are harder to staff, so agencies pay more.
- Change settings. Hospital and school district positions typically pay more than agency in-home work, and include benefits.
- Earn additional credentials. Pursuing a BCaBA (requires a bachelor's degree + coursework) or BCBA (requires a master's degree + coursework + supervised experience) dramatically increases earning potential. BCBAs average $65,000 to $85,000 annually.
- Invest in professional development. As of January 2026, PDUs become required for RBT renewal. But even before that, demonstrating ongoing learning signals commitment that supports salary negotiations. Use our RBT PDU resources to plan your development.
- Negotiate. Many RBTs accept the first offer. ABA agencies are competing for a limited workforce (there are more open RBT positions than certified RBTs in most markets). Ask for $1 to $2/hr more than the initial offer. The worst they say is no.
The Career Ladder Beyond RBT
| Credential | Education Required | Avg Salary | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| RBT | 40-hour training + HS diploma | $38,000 to $46,000 | Implement treatment plans under BCBA supervision |
| BCaBA | Bachelor's + coursework | $48,000 to $58,000 | More independent. Can supervise RBTs under a BCBA. |
| BCBA | Master's + coursework + supervised hours | $65,000 to $85,000 | Design treatment plans. Supervise RBTs and BCaBAs. Clinical authority. |
| BCBA-D | Doctorate | $85,000 to $120,000+ | Research, university, leadership. Doctoral-level practice. |
| Clinical Director | Master's + BCBA + leadership | $80,000 to $110,000 | Agency leadership. Manages clinical staff and programs. |
