RBT Exam Prep: How to Pass on Your First Try
The RBT exam is your final step to certification. It is 85 questions, 90 minutes, at a Pearson VUE testing center. The pass rate is approximately 80%, which means most people who prepare well pass on the first attempt.
This guide covers what to expect, how to study by domain, strategies for multiple-choice questions, and what to do on test day.

Exam Content by Domain
Since 1 January 2026 the exam is built on the 3rd edition of the BACB's RBT Test Content Outline. "Test Content Outline" is the current term. "Task List" is the older name for the same document. What the 3rd edition changed. Its six areas are Measurement; Assessment; Skill Acquisition; Behavior Reduction; Documentation and Reporting; and Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice.
About the weighting below. The per-area question counts in this table come from the 2nd-edition outline. We have not re-derived them against the 3rd edition. For the current breakdown, check the Test Content Outline at bacb.com. Noted 10 September 2026.

Study Strategies That Work
Focus on applied scenarios, not definitions. The exam rarely asks "what is discrete trial training?" Instead, it describes a clinical situation and asks what you would do. Practice applying concepts to scenarios.
Review your 40-hour training materials. Your training course was designed around the RBT Task List. Go back through it, especially the sections on domains you feel weakest in.
Study the Test Content Outline itself. Download the 3rd edition from bacb.com. Read every item. If you cannot explain a skill in plain language, study it until you can.
Take practice tests. Multiple practice tests help you get comfortable with the question format and identify weak areas. Time yourself (90 minutes for 85 questions = about 1 minute per question).
Study with a colleague. Quiz each other. Explain concepts out loud. Teaching a concept to someone else is one of the most effective ways to learn it.
Read the RBT Ethics Code 2.0. Ethics questions (16% of the exam) are based on this document. It is short and readable. Know the major sections and be able to apply them to scenarios.
Domain-by-Domain Study Tips
A. Measurement and Assessment (~10 questions)
- Know the difference between continuous and discontinuous measurement
- Understand when to use frequency, duration, latency, and IRT
- Know partial interval, whole interval, and momentary time sampling (when to use each)
- Understand permanent product recording
- Know how to enter data and update graphs accurately
B. Skill Acquisition (~27 questions)
- Understand all prompt types (physical, gestural, verbal, model, positional) and prompt fading
- Know discrete trial teaching (DTT) components: SD, response, consequence, ITI
- Understand reinforcement schedules (CRF, FR, VR, FI, VI)
- Know the difference between positive and negative reinforcement
- Understand stimulus discrimination and stimulus generalization
- Know preference assessment methods (MSWO, paired stimulus, free operant)
- Understand natural environment teaching (NET) and incidental teaching
- Know task analysis and chaining (forward, backward, total task)
C. Behavior Reduction (~15 questions)
- Know the 4 functions of behavior (attention, escape, access to tangibles, automatic)
- Understand DRA, DRO, DRI, and DRL (definitions and when to use each)
- Know extinction procedures and potential side effects (extinction burst)
- Understand antecedent modifications (environmental arrangement, NCR)
- Know crisis and emergency procedures
D. Documentation (~8 questions)
- Know how to write objective session notes (observable, measurable language)
- Understand what to communicate to your supervisor and when
- Know compliance reporting requirements
E. Professional Conduct (~10 questions)
- Know the RBT's scope of practice (what you can and cannot do independently)
- Understand professional boundaries with clients and families
- Know how to respond to feedback and maintain performance
- Understand client dignity and how to maintain it
F. Ethics (~14 questions)
- Read the RBT Ethics Code 2.0 thoroughly
- Know how to identify and report ethical violations
- Understand confidentiality requirements
- Know mandated reporting obligations
- Understand conflicts of interest and dual relationships
Test Day: What to Expect
- Arrive 30 minutes early. You need to check in, store personal items, and get settled.
- Bring two forms of ID. One must be a government-issued photo ID. The other can be any ID with your name and signature.
- No personal items in the testing room. Your phone, watch, notes, and bags are stored in a locker. You receive a dry-erase board or scratch paper.
- Pace yourself. You have about 63 seconds per question. If a question stumps you, flag it and move on. Come back to flagged questions at the end.
- Read every answer choice. The exam includes distractor answers that look correct at first glance. Read all options before selecting.
- Do not second-guess. Your first instinct is usually correct unless you realize you misread the question. Change answers only if you have a clear reason.
- Results in 24 to 48 hours. You will receive an email from the BACB with your pass/fail result. If you pass, your RBT certification is processed within a few weeks.
