The 5 Steps
Meet the Age and Education Requirements
Applicants must be at least 18 and have a high school-level education or equivalent. Check the BACB's current residency, criminal-background and abuse-registry requirements before applying.
Complete a 40-Hour RBT Training Course
The BACB requires a 40-hour training course. Most courses are online and self-paced, so you can complete them around your schedule.
Pass a Background Check
Check the BACB's criminal-background and abuse-registry requirements with your Attesting Certificant; employer requirements may also apply.
Complete the Competency Assessment
A qualified assessor observes you performing each task, with a client or, where allowed, in role-play, using the BACB's official Initial Competency Assessment form.
Ask an eligible assessor how to arrange the assessment and whether your training or employment agreement includes it.
Pass the RBT Exam
Register through the BACB, then schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE testing center. The exam is 85 multiple-choice questions. You have 90 minutes.
You receive the exam result at the testing center. Certification confirmation follows separately from the BACB; your supervisor must add you as a supervisee before your status becomes active.

Plan your budget: The BACB application costs $65 and one Pearson VUE exam appointment costs $45: $110 for those two fees only. Training, screening and the competency assessment have provider-dependent costs; extra exam attempts can add costs. Ask each provider for a current quote and your employer which expenses, if any, it pays. Recertification is a separate ongoing expense. After You Are Certified: Maintaining Your RBT
Certification or recertification in 2026 starts a two-year cycle. Your BACB account shows your own certification status and deadline. Here is what you need to maintain it:
- Ongoing supervision from a qualified RBT Supervisor (at least 5% of your direct service hours)
- If you recertify during 2026: a Recertification Competency Assessment one last time, before your two-year cycle begins. After that, renewal requires PDUs, not a competency assessment.
- Recertification fee paid to the BACB - recertification fee ($50 — the Board's 2-year recertification application processing fee, in force since January 1, 2026)
- During the two-year cycle beginning with certification or recertification in 2026: 12 Professional Development Units (PDUs) per 2-year certification cycle. Learn about the PDU requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
There is no single completion time. Plan around your training provider, screening, competency assessment, BACB application processing and available exam appointments. The 40-hour training must span 5 to 180 days; that is the training window, not a promise for the whole certification process. The BACB says to allow two weeks for application processing.

Yes. The career ladder is RBT (HS diploma) to BCaBA (bachelor's) to BCBA (master's) to BCBA-D (doctorate). Further study can open different roles; pay depends on the role and employer. Many RBTs pursue their BCaBA or BCBA while working.
