The International Behavior Analysis Organization (IBAO) is a credentialing body with 4,677 certificants across 119 countries. Unlike the BACB, which is US-headquartered and withdrawing from some international markets, the IBAO was designed from the ground up for international professionals. IBAO offers multiple certification levels and is growing rapidly as an alternative to BACB in regions where BACB is withdrawing.
The most recognized behavior technician credential is the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) from the BACB, which requires a 40-hour training course and supervised fieldwork. QABA offers the Applied Behavior Analysis Technician (ABAT) credential as an alternative. Both require ongoing supervision by a certified behavior analyst.
To become a BCBA, you need: (1) a master's degree or higher in behavior analysis or a related field, (2) completion of a Verified Course Sequence (VCS) in behavior analysis, (3) supervised fieldwork experience (2,000 hours, or 1,500 concentrated hours, which requires double the monthly supervision), and (4) passing the BCBA certification exam. The entire process typically takes 2 to 4 years after completing a bachelor's degree.
These are the requirements in force today. The BACB changes them on 1 January 2027: from that date there are two BCBA pathways instead of four. The two that remain are an accredited or recognized behavior-analysis degree program, and a master’s degree plus behavior-analytic coursework — so if you are on the coursework route, that route continues. If you want to be assessed under today’s rules you must apply by 31 December 2026. The board’s own rule is that you must meet the requirements in place at the time you apply, so anyone who cannot complete every requirement and apply by that date will be assessed under the new ones. The board publishes its own Guidance for Meeting the BCBA Requirements During the 2027 Transition, and that is the thing to read before you plan around any of this.
