Why Graphs Matter in ABA
Visual analysis of graphed data is the primary method BCBAs use to make treatment decisions. A graph reveals patterns that numbers alone cannot show: is the behavior increasing or decreasing? Is the intervention working? When did the change begin? The BACB requires data-based decision making, and graphs are the standard for presenting behavioral data in reports, supervision, and research.
ABA Graph Conventions
- X-axis (horizontal): Time units (sessions, days, dates)
- Y-axis (vertical): The behavioral measure (frequency, rate, duration, percentage)
- Y-axis starts at zero unless there is a scale break
- Data points: Connected within a phase, NOT connected across phase changes
- Phase change lines: Vertical dashed lines marking condition changes
- Condition labels: Centered above each phase (Baseline, Intervention, etc.)
Reading a Behavior Graph
When analyzing a graph, look for three things: level (the average value within a phase), trend (is the data going up, down, or flat?), and variability (how much do the data points bounce around?). Compare these across phases to determine if the intervention made a meaningful difference.
