RBT Basics
What is an RBT?
A Registered Behavior Technician is a paraprofessional who implements applied behavior analysis (ABA) treatment plans under the supervision of a BCBA. RBTs work directly with clients in homes, schools, clinics, and community settings. The credential is administered by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB).
What does RBT stand for?
Registered Behavior Technician. The "registered" means you are listed in the BACB's registry of certified professionals.
How many active RBTs are there?
Over 120,000 as of 2026, and growing. The RBT is the fastest-growing credential administered by the BACB, driven by insurance mandates for ABA services and a chronic workforce shortage.
Is the RBT credential recognized internationally?
The BACB administers the RBT credential internationally. RBTs practice in the United States, Canada, and numerous other countries. International recognition varies by country. Some countries have their own behavior technician credentials in addition to or instead of the RBT.
What is the BACB?
The Behavior Analyst Certification Board. It is the credentialing body for behavior analysts and behavior technicians worldwide. The BACB sets the standards for RBT, BCaBA, BCBA, and BCBA-D credentials, administers exams, and enforces the ethics code.
Certification
Do I need a college degree to become an RBT?
No. You need a high school diploma or GED equivalent. The RBT is one of the most accessible credentials in behavioral health. See the full step-by-step guide.
How long does it take to become an RBT?
Most people complete the process in 1 to 3 months. The 40-hour training course takes 1 to 4 weeks (self-paced), the competency assessment adds 1 to 3 weeks, and exam scheduling adds 2 to 4 weeks.
How much does it cost to become an RBT?
$250 to $700 total: 40-hour training ($99 to $300), background check ($50 to $100), BACB application ($50), and exam fee ($45). Many employers reimburse some or all of these costs.
What is the RBT exam like?
85 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes, at a Pearson VUE testing center. You need approximately 60 correct answers (about 71%) to pass. The exam covers all 6 domains of the RBT Task List 2nd Edition.
What if I fail the RBT exam?
You can retake it. There is a waiting period before your next attempt (typically 30 days for the first retake). You will need to pay the exam fee again. Most people who study the RBT Task List thoroughly pass on the first or second attempt.
Where can I take the 40-hour training course?

What is the RBT competency assessment?
A practical evaluation where a BCBA observes you working with a client and verifies your competency across all RBT Task List domains. It is not a written test. Most people complete it through their employer during onboarding.
How often does RBT certification renew?
Annually. Each year you need ongoing supervision, a competency assessment, and a renewal fee. As of January 2026, you also need 12 PDUs per 2-year cycle.
PDU Requirements (Effective 2026)
What are PDUs?
Professional Development Units. The new BACB requirement for RBT certification renewal as of January 1, 2026. You need 12 PDUs every 2-year certification cycle. Learn more about the PDU requirement.
How many PDUs do I need?
12 PDUs per 2-year cycle, averaging 6 per year. One PDU equals 50 instructional minutes. That works out to about 25 minutes of training per month.
When do PDU requirements start?
January 1, 2026. RBTs renewing on or after that date must have completed their PDUs.
What is the difference between CE and PD?
CE (Continuing Education) is for BCBAs and BCaBAs. PD (Professional Development) is for RBTs. They are separate BACB designations and are not interchangeable. Your supervisor's CE courses do not count toward your PDUs. Learn what counts as a PDU.
What formats are accepted for PDUs?
Interactive video-based training with assessments, live workshops, conferences, and in-service sessions led by a BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D. After July 2026, article-plus-quiz and code-word formats are banned. Check if your training counts.
Can I earn PDUs through my employer?
Yes. In-service training facilitated by a BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D at your workplace counts. Your agency does not need ACE provider status for in-service PD delivery.
How much do PDU courses cost?
In-service from your employer is free. Online libraries from ACE providers range from $50 to $300/yr. Individual courses run $20 to $80 each. See the full cost comparison.

Supervision
How much supervision do RBTs need?
At least 5% of your direct service hours per month, with a minimum of 1 supervision contact per month. See the full supervision guide.
Who can supervise an RBT?
A BCBA, BCBA-D, or BCaBA (BCaBA must be overseen by a BCBA). The supervisor must be in good standing with the BACB.
Can supervision be done remotely?
Yes, with conditions. Must include live video observation of you with a client. Check your state for specific requirements about in-person vs remote ratios.
Does supervision count as PDUs?
Not automatically. Routine clinical supervision is a separate requirement. If your supervisor structures part of supervision as formal PD (with learning objectives and assessment), that portion can qualify.
Salary and Benefits
How much do RBTs make?
$15 to $28/hr depending on location, experience, and setting. National average is $20 to $22/hr ($38,000 to $46,000 annually). See the full salary guide.

Do RBTs get benefits?
Full-time RBTs at established agencies typically receive health insurance, paid time off, and sometimes tuition reimbursement. Part-time or contract RBTs often do not. School-based RBTs employed by districts typically receive full public employee benefits.
How can I increase my RBT salary?
Gain experience (1 to 3 years adds $4 to $7/hr), specialize in high-demand areas (severe behavior, early intervention), change settings (hospitals and schools pay more), or pursue the BCaBA/BCBA credential.
Daily Work
What does an RBT do every day?
Run skill acquisition programs with clients, collect data on behavior, implement behavior reduction plans, write session notes, prepare materials, and communicate with your supervising BCBA about progress and concerns.
Where do RBTs work?
Homes (in-home ABA), center-based clinics, schools, hospitals, group homes, and telehealth. In-home and center-based agencies employ the most RBTs.
Is being an RBT stressful?
It can be. You work with clients who may display challenging behaviors. The work requires physical stamina, emotional resilience, and good supervision. Burnout is a real concern. Quality supervision, reasonable caseloads, and ongoing professional development all help.
Can RBTs work with adults?
Yes. While ABA is most commonly associated with children with autism, RBTs also work with adolescents and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, and in organizational behavior management settings.
What is the typical RBT schedule?
It varies by setting. In-home RBTs often work afternoons and evenings (after school hours). Center-based RBTs typically work standard business hours. School-based RBTs follow the academic calendar. Many RBTs work part-time, especially when starting out.
Do RBTs work alone?
RBTs work directly with clients but are never clinically independent. A BCBA designs and oversees the treatment plan. In-home RBTs are often physically alone with the client and family during sessions, but have a supervisor available by phone or video. Center-based RBTs work alongside other staff.

Can an RBT become a BCBA?

What is a BCaBA?
A Board Certified assistant Behavior Analyst. It is the credential between RBT and BCBA. Requires a bachelor's degree plus coursework from a BACB ACE Provider. BCaBAs can supervise RBTs under a BCBA's oversight. Average salary: $48,000 to $58,000.
Is the RBT a dead-end job?
No. The RBT is an entry point, not an endpoint. You can advance to senior/lead RBT, BCaBA, BCBA, clinical director, or private practice. Many BCBAs will tell you that their RBT experience was the most valuable part of their training. The career ladder in ABA is well-defined.
How long does it take to go from RBT to BCBA?
Typically 4 to 6 years after starting as an RBT. This includes earning a bachelor's degree (if you do not have one), completing a master's program with BACB coursework, and accumulating 2,000 supervised fieldwork hours. Many people work as RBTs while in school.
Are RBTs in demand?
Yes. There are more open RBT positions than certified RBTs in most markets. Demand is driven by insurance mandates for ABA services, growing autism diagnosis rates, and high turnover in the field. This demand gives RBTs negotiating power on salary and benefits.
What specializations are available for RBTs?
While the RBT credential itself does not have formal specializations, you can develop expertise in areas like early intervention (ages 0 to 3), severe problem behavior, feeding disorders, school-based ABA, adult services, or telehealth delivery. Agencies often pay more for RBTs with specialized experience.
