Before you enroll, ask these five questions
- What was the program's first-time pass rate for the last two years? Look at how many candidates the rate is based on. A rate from eight people moves a lot from year to year.
- Is it ABAI- or APBA-accredited, or on track to be before 2032? Check its current status with both ABAI and APBA, since the BACB report lists only ABAI status. ABAI recognition is not accreditation and won't meet the 2032 rule.
- Who arranges and supervises your fieldwork? At some programs, students find their own supervisor.
- What does the whole program cost, with fees? Ask for the total, not one term or one credit.
- How long do students usually take to finish, and to pass?
What these numbers can't tell you
Pass rates show who passed the exam the first time, not who became a competent behavior analyst. Programs differ in who enrolls, and a program's state isn't where its students live. In the BACB's own words: "Pass rates are historical outcomes; they are not rankings, endorsements, or guarantees of future or individual performance." The BACB also says to weigh accreditation, cost, format, faculty and student supports, and fieldwork opportunities together.
Where the numbers come from
BACB, BCBA Examination Pass Rates for University Training Programs, 2025, and the 2024 report. US-located programs with more than six first-time candidates; the BACB pools two years for some small programs, marked "two years pooled." ABAI status and format are as printed in the BACB reports; the reports don't list APBA accreditation, and a program's status or format may have changed since. Confirm current status with ABAI and APBA, and confirm the format with the program. The 2032 rule: BACB, University training for those pursuing BCBA certification. How to read pass rates: BACB.
