A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a paraprofessional who implements Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). RBTs work directly with individuals with autism and related developmental disabilities, running therapy programs, collecting data, and teaching communication and daily living skills. Becoming an RBT requires a 40-hour training program, a competency assessment, and passing the BACB's RBT examination, a process most people complete in 4 to 8 weeks.
What Does an RBT Do?
An RBT's primary role is implementing ABA programs designed by a supervising BCBA. This is direct, hands-on clinical work: running therapy sessions with real clients, not paperwork.
In a typical session, an RBT might:
- Run discrete trial training (DTT) programs targeting language, social skills, or academic readiness
- Use natural environment teaching (NET) to practice skills in real-world contexts
- Record data on every target behavior using structured data sheets or apps
- Implement behavior reduction strategies as directed by the supervising BCBA
- Teach daily living skills: self-care, community safety, meal preparation
- Complete session documentation and report observations to the supervising BCBA
RBTs work in many settings: homes, clinics, schools, daycares, and community settings. Hours are typically part-time or full-time during morning and afternoon school hours, though clinic-based positions often extend into evenings.
How to Become an RBT in 2026: Step by Step
Meet Basic Eligibility
Age 18+, high school diploma or GED, and pass a background check. No prior experience in ABA required.
Complete 40-Hour Training
Enroll in a BACB-compliant 40-hour training program covering the RBT Task List (3rd Edition). Online self-paced courses take 1–2 weeks.
Pass the Competency Assessment
A BCBA or BCaBA observes you demonstrating skills from the RBT Task List in person. This assessment validates that you can perform the job, not just know the theory.
Pass the RBT Examination
A 90-minute, 75-question multiple-choice exam administered at a Pearson VUE testing center. The exam covers the RBT Task List: measurement, skill acquisition, behavior reduction, documentation, and professional conduct.
Maintain Certification Annually
RBT certification renews every year. Requirements include ongoing supervision (5% of direct care hours with a BCBA), a renewal competency assessment, and professional development units (PDUs).
Advance to BCBA

RBT Training: What the 40 Hours Covers
The BACB's RBT Task List (3rd Edition) specifies exactly what the 40-hour training must cover (our RBT exam prep guide walks the same list). Training programs vary in format, from video-based to self-paced modules to live webinars, but all must address these content areas:
- Measurement: How to count, record, and graph behavior data
- Skill Acquisition: DTT, NET, prompting strategies, shaping, chaining
- Behavior Reduction: Identifying functions of behavior, extinction, differential reinforcement
- Documentation and Reporting: Session notes, incident reports, communicating with supervisors

RBT Career Path: From Technician to Clinician

These are the requirements in force today. The BACB changes them on 1 January 2027: from that date there are two BCBA pathways instead of four. The two that remain are an accredited or recognized behavior-analysis degree program, and a master’s degree plus behavior-analytic coursework — so if you are on the coursework route, that route continues. If you want to be assessed under today’s rules you must apply by 31 December 2026. The board’s own rule is that you must meet the requirements in place at the time you apply, so anyone who cannot complete every requirement and apply by that date will be assessed under the new ones. The board publishes its own Guidance for Meeting the BCBA Requirements During the 2027 Transition, and that is the thing to read before you plan around any of this.
