The New 12-PDU Requirement Is Here. Are You Ready?
As of January 1, 2026, every Registered Behavior Technician must complete 12 Professional Development Units (PDUs) per two-year certification cycle to maintain their RBT credential. This is the first time the BACB has required RBTs to complete structured professional development for renewal.
Twelve PDUs. Not 20. Not 40. Exactly 12, spread across a two-year cycle. That works out to roughly 25 minutes of structured training per month. It is manageable, but only if you plan for it. The RBTs and agencies that start tracking now will not be scrambling later.

Why These Tools Exist: CE and PD Are Not the Same
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that existing BCBA continuing education (CE) will satisfy the RBT PDU requirement. It will not. CE and PD are mutually exclusive under the BACB. A course designated as CE does not count toward RBT PDUs. A course designated as PD does not count toward BCBA CE. They are separate systems with separate rules.
Your supervisor's CE courses cannot be applied to your RBT renewal. You need training specifically designated as Professional Development (PD), facilitated by a BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D, covering the RBT Task List (2nd Edition). Our PDU Checker helps you verify whether a specific activity qualifies.

Three Pathways, One Requirement
The BACB allows RBTs to earn PDUs through three pathways. Each of our tools is built with all three in mind:
- ACE provider events. Training from BACB-authorized Approved Continuing Education providers. The event must be specifically designated as PD. Special Learning is an ACE provider (OP-14-2437).
- In-service training. PD delivered at your workplace by a BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D. Your agency does not need to be an ACE provider for this pathway. If your organization has a qualified supervisor on staff, they can deliver PD training in-house.
- University coursework. Courses at accredited institutions, taught by a BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D. Most relevant for RBTs who are pursuing further education or advancing toward BCaBA or BCBA credentials.

For Supervisors and Clinical Directors
If you supervise RBTs, the PDU requirement changes your job. You now need a plan for delivering or facilitating PD training that counts. Here is what we recommend:

Can my BCBA's CE courses count toward my RBT PDUs?
No. Continuing Education (CE) and Professional Development (PD) are mutually exclusive designations under the BACB. CE is for BCBAs and BCaBAs. PD is for RBTs.
