The New 12-PDU Requirement Is Here. Are You Ready?
After you are newly certified or recertify in 2026, the BACB requires 12 PDUs in each 2-year recertification cycle. Your first deadline is two years after your own 2026 date. This is the first time the BACB has required RBTs to complete structured professional development for renewal.

Why These Tools Exist: CE and PD Are Not the Same
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that existing BCBA continuing education (CE) will satisfy the RBT PDU requirement. It will not. CE and PD are mutually exclusive under the BACB. A course designated as CE does not count toward RBT PDUs. A course designated as PD does not count toward BCBA CE. They are separate systems with separate rules.
Do not count a CE certificate as an RBT PDU record. For ACE PD events, qualifying in-service training and university coursework, check the specific provider, content and documentation requirements in the current RBT Handbook. Three Pathways, One Requirement
The BACB allows RBTs to earn PDUs through three pathways. Each of our tools is built with all three in mind:
- ACE provider PD events. Training from BACB Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) providers. The event must be specifically designated as PD. Special Learning is an ACE provider (OP-14-2437).
- In-service training. PD delivered at your workplace by a BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D. Your agency does not need to be an ACE provider for this pathway. If your organization has a qualified supervisor on staff, they can deliver PD training in-house.
- University coursework. Didactic behavior-analytic courses at an accredited university, with a grade of C or higher or a pass in a pass/fail course. Keep the syllabus and transcript. The RBT Handbook does not impose the in-service trainer credential rule on this pathway.

For Supervisors and Clinical Directors
If you supervise RBTs, the PDU requirement changes your job. You now need a plan for delivering or facilitating PD training that counts. Here is what we recommend:
- Audit your team's renewal dates. Record individual cycle dates separately. Use the Agency PDU Calculator for an illustrative team cost comparison; it does not track those dates.
- Build a tracking system now. The PDU Tracking Sheet gives your team a standardized format to document every PD activity. Start collecting documentation now: for a cycle beginning at your own 2026 certification or recertification date, the first deadline is two years later in 2028.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many PDUs do RBTs need under the new cycle?
Exactly 12 Professional Development Units per two-year certification cycle. For ACE and in-service PD events, 25 minutes earns 0.5 PDU and 50 minutes earns 1 PDU; rounding up is not permitted. University coursework uses a separate credit-hour conversion in the RBT Handbook. The requirement applies under the cycle effective January 1, 2026, with the first deadline two years after each person’s own 2026 certification or recertification date. Can my BCBA's CE courses count toward my RBT PDUs?
No. Continuing Education (CE) and Professional Development (PD) are mutually exclusive designations under the BACB. CE is for BCBAs and BCaBAs. PD is for RBTs. Even if you attend the same training session as your supervisor, it only counts toward your PDUs if the training is specifically designated as PD. Read more: What Counts as a PDU for RBTs.
