The BACB's most consequential 2026 update lands July 1: ACE Providers offering asynchronous (self-paced) CE events must implement participation-monitoring checks - defined as a minimum of 3 knowledge-check questions per 1.0 CEU. Code-word entry and passive viewing time no longer qualify. CEUs you complete going forward through an asynchronous provider that has not updated its events may not qualify; CEUs already in your record are unaffected. The 32-CEU / 4-Ethics / 3-Supervision structure remains unchanged.
If you renew in 2026 or 2027, this matters now. Here is what the rule says, why it exists, what to confirm with your provider, and how to make sure every CEU you complete this cycle actually counts.
The headline rule: participation-monitoring checks
Starting July 1, 2026, every BACB ACE Provider that offers asynchronous CE events must demonstrate participation-monitoring checks. It does not mean "interactive." It does not mean "videos with chapters." The BACB has defined it specifically:
A minimum of 3 knowledge-check questions per 1.0 CEU, answered correctly and tracked, for asynchronous (self-paced) events.
A 4-CEU on-demand course must include at least 12 knowledge-check questions. A 1-CEU webinar must include at least 3. The questions must be tracked - not optional, not passive.
What does not count under the new rule
- Code-word submission - providers who hide a password in the video and ask you to enter it at the end.
- Login-time / session-duration tracking - providers who only count whether you watched for the full duration.
- Simple attestation - providers who ask you to check a box confirming you watched.
If your current CE provider uses any of these mechanisms for asynchronous events, those events may not produce valid CEUs after July 1, 2026.
What's not changing
The renewal mechanics themselves are unchanged. To be specific:
| Requirement | BCBA | BCaBA |
|---|---|---|
| Total CEUs per 2-year cycle | 32 | 20 |
| Ethics CEUs | 4 | 4 |
| Supervision CEUs (if you supervise) | 3 | - |
| Carryover allowed? | No | No |
BCaBA total-CEU figure is the BACB historical published value of 20. Verify against your most recent BACB renewal communication; primary-source confirmation is pending direct BACB documentation pull.
The 4 Ethics CEUs are part of the 32 (not in addition). The 3 Supervision CEUs are required only if you serve as a BCBA supervisor.
How to confirm your provider is ready
Three questions to ask any CE provider you are considering for your 2026 cycle:
- "Do your asynchronous courses include at least 3 knowledge-check questions per CEU?" This is the BACB's threshold. Anything below it is non-compliant after July 1.
- "What is your quiz pass-rate requirement?" Higher pass rates (80% or above) signal a provider built for the new standard, not retrofitting around it.
- "Have you updated your platform for participation-monitoring checks, or are you still planning to?" Providers still "planning" as of mid-2026 will likely have a service gap.
How Special Learning compares
Special Learning's courses require an 80% quiz pass rate to award CEUs and are built around knowledge-check questions throughout. CEUs earned through Special Learning are audit-ready, cycle after cycle.
We are an active BACB ACE Provider (#OP-14-2437) and updated our quiz architecture well ahead of the rule change.
The "use what you bought" hook - no carryover
A frequently underweighted detail in 2026 planning: your unused CEUs do not roll over. If you bought a 32-CEU bundle in March 2026 and completed 28 CEUs before your December 2026 renewal, those extra 4 CEUs disappear. They do not apply to your 2027-2028 cycle.
Plan to use the credits you've purchased before renewal. If you have an unfinished bundle from earlier this year, the second half of 2026 is when you finish it - not the next cycle. See our companion explainer on CEU rollover rules for the exact mechanics and common mistakes.
What to do this week if you renew in 2026
A short action checklist:
- Check your BACB Gateway for your exact renewal date. Your 32 CEUs must be completed and logged before that date.
- Inventory the CEUs you have already completed this cycle. Pull your certificates of completion. Confirm each is from a BACB ACE Provider.
- Count Ethics and Supervision specifically. You need at least 4 Ethics. If you supervise, you need 3 Supervision. Many BCBAs hit 32 total but discover they are short on one sub-requirement.
- Confirm your remaining CEUs will come from a participation-monitoring-compliant provider if you plan to complete them after July 1, 2026.
- Log everything in the BACB Gateway as you complete it. Not at renewal time. Now.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Does the July 1, 2026 rule affect synchronous (live) CE events? A: No. Participation-monitoring checks are required for asynchronous events. Live webinars and in-person events already involve active participation.
Q: Do CEUs you already earned still count? A: Yes, if they were valid at the time of completion. The new rule applies to events offered after July 1, 2026, not retroactively.
Q: Do I need 3 Supervision CEUs if I'm not a supervisor? A: No. The 3 Supervision CEUs apply only to BCBAs serving as supervisors. If you do not supervise, your requirement is 32 CEUs with 4 Ethics.
Q: What happens if I complete CEUs but don't log them in the BACB Gateway? A: The CEUs do not exist for purposes of your renewal. Completion and logging are separate steps. Log as you go.
Next step
If you renew in 2026 or 2027 and have not confirmed your CEU plan, the Special Learning CE Library delivers a full 32-CEU bundle (4 Ethics, 3.5 Supervision included) at $6.22 per CEU - $199 total, well below the $30-$50 per-CEU industry average. Every course is built with knowledge-check questions throughout, in step with the July 2026 participation-monitoring change.
