Your CEU Requirements: The Numbers That Matter
Every BCBA must complete 32 continuing education units (CEUs) per 2-year certification cycle. But not all 32 are interchangeable. The BACB requires specific categories, and missing even one category means your renewal will not go through.

A few critical details most BCBAs overlook:
Ethics and supervision CEUs cannot be substituted. You cannot use extra general ABA hours to cover a shortfall in ethics or supervision. Each category must be met independently.
Supervision CEUs apply if you supervised. BCBAs who provided supervision during the cycle must include 3 CEUs in supervision. Like ethics hours, these cannot be covered with extra general ABA hours.
Most CEUs come from an ACE provider. BACB Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) providers are the most common and straightforward source of Learning CEUs. The BACB also recognizes a limited set of other Learning activities — qualifying behavior-analytic graduate coursework and certain BACB certification activities — but for most renewals, ACE-provider events are the practical path. Verify a provider's ACE status before enrolling in CE events.
On July 1, 2026, new BACB ACE Provider standards require participation-monitoring checks in asynchronous (self-paced) CE: at least 3 knowledge-check questions per CEU. This is not a video-only mandate. Journal clubs and podcasts still count when they include the required knowledge checks, while standalone article-and-quiz no longer qualifies on its own going forward. The change is about how providers build CE events, not a format ban. CEUs you completed before July 2026 still count toward your current cycle.
This change is significant. It means that some CE providers you may have used in the past will no longer be eligible sources for your CEUs unless they update how they build their CE events. Confirm with your providers now rather than discovering this at renewal time.

If any of your planned or in-progress courses are standalone article-and-quiz, hours you complete after July 1, 2026 may not qualify on their own. Many states impose additional CE requirements beyond what the BACB mandates. Some states require specific topics (such as cultural responsiveness or telehealth), additional hours, or separate state licensure renewals with their own deadlines. Once you have confirmed all 32 CEUs are in order (4 ethics, 3 supervision, 25 general), submit your renewal through the BACB Gateway. The renewal fee is $235. You will need to attest that your CEUs are accurate and that you can provide documentation if audited. Keep all certificates on file for at least 7 years.
The BACB randomly audits renewal applications and requires documentation for all claimed CEUs. Keep PDF copies of every CE certificate organized by cycle. Include the provider name, ACE number, course title, CEU category, and completion date. Taking 15 minutes to organize now saves hours of stress if you are selected.

What Happens If You Miss Your Renewal Deadline?
Missing your renewal deadline has real consequences. Your BCBA certification will lapse, and you will not be able to practice, bill, or supervise as a BCBA until it is reinstated. The BACB does offer a late renewal period (typically 30 days past expiration) with a late fee, but beyond that window, you may need to go through a more involved reinstatement process.
If your certification lapses, your employer will be notified, and any services you provide during the lapsed period may not be billable. This can affect your clients, your organization, and your professional standing. The simplest prevention is starting your renewal preparation at least 6 months before your expiration date.
A Note on the Ethics Requirement
The 4-CEU ethics requirement is about more than checking a box. The BACB Ethics Code was substantially updated, and many BCBAs are still catching up on the implications for their daily practice.
