Your 2026 BCBA continuing education requirements, stated plainly
To maintain BCBA certification, you complete 32 continuing education units (CEUs) per two-year recertification cycle. Of those:

BCaBAs follow a lighter total but the same structure: a recurring CE requirement with an ethics component every cycle. Your cycle is anchored to your own certification anniversary — count forward two years from there, not from January.

The July 1, 2026 participation-monitoring rule — and what people are getting wrong
There's a real update effective July 1, 2026, and it's generating more fear than it deserves. The BACB's updated ACE Provider Handbook introduces participation monitoring on asynchronous (on-demand) continuing education: each on-demand course must include a minimum of three knowledge-assessment questions per CEU.
That's the whole change. It is not:
- a ban on text, article, or reading-based CE,
- a "video-only" or "interactive-only" mandate,
- a sign that your existing on-demand CEUs are suddenly being invalidated.
Article-and-quiz courses, literature reviews, journal clubs, and podcast-format CE all remain fully valid — provided they carry at least three knowledge questions per CEU. If a provider tells you on-demand CE is being "phased out," they're misreading the rule. The change raises the floor on assessment, it does not eliminate a format.
The July 1, 2026 update is a participation-monitoring requirement (3 knowledge checks per CEU on asynchronous courses) — not a format ban. Live, video, article, journal-club, and podcast CE all still count when they include the required knowledge checks. CEUs you have already earned are unaffected.
What this means when you choose courses
- Confirm your renewal date and your totals in your BACB account. Your account is the authoritative record of where you are in the cycle — always reconcile against it, not against a third party's summary.
- Make sure your ethics and supervision CEUs are covered early. These are the components people scramble for at the end. Knock them out first.
- Choose on-demand courses built with real knowledge checks (three or more questions per CEU). A course with genuine assessment isn't just aligned with the July 2026 standard — it's how you actually retain what you learn.
