BCBA Certification & Renewal

How much does it cost to recertify as a BCBA?

By Special Learning Published: September 2, 2026 Last Reviewed: September 2026 5 min read

Recertifying as a BCBA costs two things: the BACB's $215 recertification application fee, and whatever you pay for your 32 required CEUs. The CEU number is the one that moves. Buy a flat-rate library and the whole 32 lands near $199. Buy courses one at a time at, say, $25 a CEU and 32 of them is $800. Add the $215 fee to either number before you compare anything else.

Direct Answer
$215 from the BACB, plus your CEUs
Your total is the BACB's $215 recertification fee plus 32 CEUs, priced anywhere from $199 for a library to $800 if you pay $25 a CEU one course at a time.

What does the BACB charge to recertify?

The BACB's own fee table lists a Recertification Application fee of $215 for a BCBA. That's separate from anything you spend on continuing education. It's paid to the BACB directly, through your BACB portal account, when you submit your recertification application, not to whatever CE provider you bought courses from. Miss your recertification date and a $50 late fee gets added, on top of a short window to reinstate before your certification lapses. None of this depends on where your CEUs came from. It's a flat charge the board sets, and the number to write down is $215, not whatever a CE provider's marketing calls "the recertification cost."

What do 32 CEUs actually cost?

Providers price CEUs by the course or by the library. Buy single courses and the per-CEU price is what you're comparing: at $15 a CEU, 32 CEUs is $480; at $25 a CEU it's $800, and that's before any ethics or supervision hour you buy on its own. Those two prices are arithmetic examples, not any provider's list price. Buy a library and the per-CEU price drops hard. Special Learning's Video CE Library 1 is $199 for 32.5 CE hours: 25 general, 4 ethics, 3.5 supervision. $199 divided by 32.5 is $6.12 per CEU, and the 4 ethics and 3.5 supervision hours are inside that one price, not sold separately.

Add the BACB's $215 fee to either path and you get your real total. $215 plus $199 is $414 if you buy the library. $215 plus $800 is $1,015 if you buy courses one at a time at $25 a CEU. Same 32 CEUs, same recertification, a $600 gap between the two paths.

The hidden cost: buying ethics and supervision last

Most CE is general content, so ethics and supervision hours are the ones people run out of time for. Land in your last month still needing your ethics hours and, if you supervise, your supervision hours (that supervision number moves from 3 to 4 on January 1, 2027) and you're shopping in a smaller pool of courses, on a deadline, which is exactly when per-CEU prices run highest. At $25 a CEU, the 7 ethics and supervision hours alone are $175, most of the $199 a library with them built in costs. Bank the required subtypes early and this cost never shows up.

What to check before you pay for CEUs

Confirm the provider is a BACB Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) provider before you buy anything; for a BCBA recertification, the BACB is the body that counts. Confirm which hours are designated ethics and which are designated supervision, because that call is made course by course by the provider, not by the topic alone. If the course is self-paced, ask whether it includes participation monitoring: as of July 1, 2026 the BACB requires it of providers on asynchronous CE, and a course built before that date and never updated is the risk. None of this changes the price on the receipt, but it changes what you're actually buying.

When to buy CEUs in your two-year cycle

Your recertification cycle is anchored to your certification date, not to any purchase, so check the exact date on your BACB account before you plan around it. Buying early doesn't lower the price by itself, but it protects you from the scenario above: hunting for ethics and supervision hours at the last minute at the highest per-CEU price. A library bought in month one carries the same 32.5 hours as one bought in month twenty-three, for the same $199. The only thing timing changes is your choice of provider.

The full total, added up

Add the BACB's $215 recertification fee to your CEU cost and you have the number that matters. Buy the library: $215 plus $199 is $414 for the fee and 32.5 CE hours, ethics and supervision included. Buy piecemeal at $15 to $25 a CEU: $215 plus $480 to $800 is $695 to $1,015, and that's before you've spent extra hunting down ethics or supervision hours in the last month. Same certification, same 32 hours, a gap of $600 or more depending only on how you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the $215 BACB fee count toward my 32 CEUs?

No. The $215 is the BACB's recertification application fee, paid directly to the board when you submit your renewal. It has nothing to do with what you spend on continuing education. Your 32 CEUs are a separate cost, paid to whatever ACE provider you choose, and the two numbers just happen to land on your desk in the same renewal season.

How much do 32 CEUs cost?

It depends entirely on the provider. Buying single courses, the per-CEU price decides it: at $15 a CEU, 32 CEUs is $480; at $25, it's $800. Buying a flat-rate library, Special Learning's Video CE Library 1 is $199 for 32.5 hours, or $6.12 a CEU, with the required ethics and supervision hours already inside it.

Does the All Access Annual plan include a set number of CE hours?

No, and don't expect one attached to it. All Access Annual is $299 for 12 months of access to the CE libraries; it doesn't carry the stated CE-hour number that Video CE Library 1 does. If your goal is a fixed 32 hours at a fixed price, check what's actually included before you buy.

What's the hidden cost people run into?

Buying ethics and supervision hours separately, in the last month of the cycle. General CE is easy to find any time; the required ethics and supervision hours are the ones that run short, and shopping for them under deadline pressure tends to cost more per hour, not less.

Do self-paced CE courses cost more because of the July 2026 rule?

Not necessarily. The July 1, 2026 change requires participation monitoring on self-paced CE, which is about how the course is built, not what it costs. Ask the provider whether their self-paced courses include it before you buy.

Where do I find out exactly what I owe and by when?

Your BACB portal account. Your recertification date, your CEU balance, and any fees due are specific to your account, and nothing on a provider's website, including this one, can tell you that number. Check it before you buy anything.

32.5 CE hours in one purchase

Video CE Library 1 is $199 for 32.5 CE hours, $6.12 a CEU, with the ethics and supervision hours already inside. Add the BACB's $215 fee and your total is $414.
