BCBA CEU Planning Guide 2026–2027: How to Plan and Track Your Continuing Education

By Karen Chung, BCBA Published: June 16, 2026 Last Reviewed: June 2026 12 min read

Renewing your BCBA certification requires 32 continuing education units (CEUs) every two years — and not just any 32 CEUs. The BACB specifies required subtypes, approved providers, and as of July 2026, a knowledge-check requirement for self-paced courses. Without a clear plan, most BCBAs find themselves scrambling in the final months of their renewal cycle to make up missing hours in the right categories.

This guide walks you through exactly what you need, how to plan it across your two-year cycle, and how to track your progress so your renewal goes smoothly.

July 2026 Update Starting July 1, 2026, the BACB changes how self-paced (asynchronous) CE is structured: each self-paced course must include at least 3 knowledge-check questions per CEU. This is a structural change, not a ban on any format — recorded courses, article-and-quiz, and similar self-study remain eligible as long as they include these knowledge checks. When choosing a self-paced course, confirm it includes knowledge-check questions.

What BCBAs Need for Renewal: The 32 CEU Requirement

Every BCBA must complete 32 continuing education units (CEUs) within their 2-year BACB renewal cycle. Of those 32, the BACB requires specific subtypes that must come from BACB Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) providers.

Important: All 32 CEUs must be completed through a BACB ACE provider. CEUs from non-ACE providers do not count toward BACB renewal requirements.

For a complete breakdown of each CEU type, including what ethics and supervision courses must cover, see the full BCBA CEU requirements guide for 2026.

The 4 Required CEU Types Explained

1. Ethics CEUs (4 required)

Four of your 32 CEUs must focus specifically on the BACB Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts. These courses must cover the current edition of the Ethics Code — courses on general professional ethics or psychology ethics do not satisfy this requirement unless they specifically address BACB ethical standards.

Ethics CEUs are available in many formats: multi-hour comprehensive ethics courses (which fulfill the entire 4-CEU requirement in one go) or shorter modules that you combine to reach 4 hours. Ethics courses count toward your 32 CEU total.

2. Supervision CEUs (3 required for supervisors)

If you provide BACB supervision — supervising RBTs, BCaBAs, or candidates — you must complete 3 supervision CEUs per renewal cycle. These courses must cover BACB supervision standards, the roles and responsibilities of supervisors, and effective supervision practices.

The 3 supervision CEUs count within your 32 CEU total. BCBAs who do not provide any BACB supervision are not required to complete supervision CEUs, though it is still recommended for professional development. If you begin providing supervision mid-cycle, consult the BACB for guidance on whether the requirement applies to your current cycle.

See the dedicated BCBA supervision CEU requirement guide for complete details.

3. Unrestricted CEUs (fills remaining hours)

The remaining 25 CEUs (after ethics and supervision) can be in any BACB-eligible content area — behavior analytic content, autism intervention, organizational behavior management, research methods, and more. These "unrestricted" CEUs must still come from a BACB ACE provider but are not limited to a specific topic.

4. The July 2026 Knowledge-Check Change (self-paced CE)

Effective July 1, 2026, self-paced (asynchronous) CE must include at least 3 knowledge-check questions per CEU. The change is about how a self-paced course is built — it does not disqualify any particular format. Recorded courses and self-study remain eligible as long as they include the required knowledge checks.

When selecting courses after July 1, 2026, confirm with the ACE provider that their courses meet this requirement before purchasing.

How to Plan Your CEUs Across Two Years

The biggest mistake BCBAs make is treating CEU completion as a year-2 problem. With 32 CEUs required over 24 months, the math is simple: complete roughly 16 CEUs per year, or about 1–2 CEUs per month. This pace is easily achievable and eliminates end-of-cycle panic.

The Three-Phase Planning Framework

Phase 1 — First 6 Months: Lock in Required Subtypes Early

Complete your ethics and supervision CEUs in the first six months of your cycle, not the last. Why: these are the hardest to fulfill at the last minute (limited scheduling availability in required-topic courses), and completing them early confirms your required subtypes are covered regardless of what else comes up.

Phase 2 — Months 7–18: Unrestricted CEUs at Your Pace

With required subtypes covered, the remaining 17–20 unrestricted CEUs can be completed at a steady pace of 1–2 per month. Choose topics that align with your professional development goals, client population, or areas where you want to deepen expertise.

Phase 3 — Final 6 Months: Verify and Complete

By month 18 you should need only 4–7 CEUs to reach 32. Use this phase to verify your BACB Gateway log is accurate, complete any remaining courses, and submit renewal well before your deadline.

Do Not Wait Until the Final Quarter BCBAs who begin CEU completion in the final 3 months of their cycle face two risks: course availability in required topics may be limited, and any technical issue with ACE provider reporting or BACB Gateway submission can push past your deadline. Your BACB certification cannot be extended once it lapses.

Finding BACB-Eligible CEU Courses

All CEUs must be completed through a BACB Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) provider. The BACB maintains a searchable directory of approved providers at BACB.com. Not every CE platform or training program is a BACB ACE provider — always verify provider status before purchasing a course intended for BACB renewal credit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many CEUs does a BCBA need for renewal?

BCBAs must complete 32 CEUs during each 2-year BACB certification renewal cycle. These include 4 ethics CEUs, 3 supervision CEUs (for BCBAs who supervise), and 25 unrestricted CEUs. All 32 must be earned from BACB ACE providers.

How many ethics CEUs does a BCBA need?

4 ethics CEUs per 2-year renewal cycle. These must specifically cover the BACB Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts and be earned through a BACB ACE provider.

How many supervision CEUs does a BCBA need?

3 supervision CEUs per 2-year renewal cycle, required for BCBAs who provide BACB supervision. These count toward the 32 CEU total.

When should a BCBA start earning CEUs for renewal?

Immediately after your certification renewal date. Target 16 CEUs per year — roughly 1–2 per month. Complete ethics and supervision CEUs in the first 6 months of your cycle so required subtypes are covered early.

What counts as a BACB-eligible CEU?

CEUs must be completed through a BACB Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) provider. As of July 1, 2026, self-paced (asynchronous) courses must also include at least 3 knowledge-check questions per CEU.

Can I carry over CEUs from one renewal cycle to the next?

No. CEUs completed before your most recent renewal date do not count toward your current cycle. All 32 CEUs must be earned within your active 2-year period.

What happens if I miss my BCBA renewal deadline?

Your certification lapses. Reinstatement may require retaking the BCBA examination. The BACB does not extend deadlines. Set a renewal reminder 90 days before your deadline and do not wait until the final month to complete your hours.
