QABA and IBAO renewal: the CE you need, and where to get it

What each board asks for at renewal, taken from the boards' own pages, and recorded courses that carry QABA or IBAO credit.

QABA and IBAO each set their own continuing education rules, and they differ from the BACB's. Here's what each board says you need at renewal. Check your own situation on the board's pages: QABA renewal, the IBA Handbook and the IBT Handbook.

QABA: QBA, QASP-S and ABAT

Every 2 years. QABA has four renewal deadlines a year: January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1. Yours is set by when you were certified or last renewed. You can renew up to 60 days before your deadline.
How many CEUs. QABA's renewal page: "There are 12 CEUs due for the ABAT, 20 CEUs for the QASP-S, and 32 CEUs for the QBA due at the 2-year renewal deadline." The page adds: "In addition, a minimum of 1 hour for ethics for the ABAT, 2 hours for the QASP-S, and 3 hours of ethics for the QBA."
Your first renewal. Since January 1, 2024, a QBA's first renewal also needs 2 hours of Trauma Informed Care and 2 hours of Comorbidities/Multiple Diagnosis, and a QASP-S's first renewal needs 2 hours of Trauma Informed Care.
Who counts. CE from an approved QABA provider counts without a cap. Seminars, webinars and workshops from providers that aren't pre-approved by QABA are capped at 2 CE. Every CEU needs "a certificate of attendance with a signature and the printed name of the presenter", and presenters must hold a master's degree or above in a related field.
If you're late: If your renewal has lapsed more than 30 days (up to 90), QABA charges a $50 reinstatement fee on top of the renewal fee; past 90 days, a $100 penalty on top of the renewal fee. If a certificate stays expired for a full 2-year renewal period, you have to reapply and retake the exam.

IBAO: IBA and IBT

IBA, first 2-year cycle. The IBA Handbook asks for 24 continuing education units: 4 hours of Ethics, 4 in Supervision, 4 in Cultural Diversity and Awareness and 12 in ABA Topics, plus 1 year of professional mentorship. The handbook says the first cycle has extra requirements; for later cycles, check with IBAO.
IBT. The IBT Handbook asks for 8 continuing education units, 4 per year: 2 hours of Ethics (1 per year), 2 in Cultural Diversity and Awareness (1 per year) and 4 in ABA Topics (2 per year), along with ongoing supervision of your practice.
Proof. IBAO asks for a document that clearly shows the training's content and how long it ran. Online or in-person seminars, workshops and trainings on ABA topics are acceptable.

Three collections certificants choose

QABA and IBAO credit applies only to qualifying sessions and categories shown on each product page. Check the session’s completion, quiz, evaluation and certificate conditions. Each collection is one payment for 12 months of access; a 7-day free trial is available. No BACB credit is offered with them right now.

Recorded courses with QABA or IBAO credit

Special Learning is a QABA-approved CE provider and an IBAO-approved CE provider. Our QABA and IBAO page lists recorded courses and collections; check each course page for the credit offered for the session. No BACB credit is offered with these purchases right now, and your board decides whether a certificate meets your renewal requirements.

Plan your next continuing education

Use the QABA renewal hours planner for QBA, QASP-S or ABAT, or the IBAO continuing education category planner for IBT or a first-cycle IBA. Each is a planning estimate; the board decides eligibility.

Choose your credential checklist

Use the checklist for your own board and certification.
