Why does everyone say 32 CEUs when you only need 20?

What counts toward your 20 CEUs?
CEUs come from three activity types under BACB rules: attending events run by an Authorized Continuing Education provider, completing behavior-analytic coursework for a grade, or teaching and publishing in the field. Special Learning is one of those ACE providers. There's no cap on how many of your 20 come from any single activity type, but repeating a course you already took doesn't count twice. The content has to go past a basic introduction to behavior-analytic technique, whatever the format. Pick the ones that build the skills you're missing, not just the ones that clear fastest.
Do you need the 3 supervision CEUs?
That depends on whether you supervised RBTs on record at any point during the cycle, not whether you're supervising right now. Supervise for one month out of twenty-four and the 3 supervision CEUs are still required. Skip supervision the whole cycle and you don't owe them: put those CEUs toward general content instead. The supervision CEUs have to be behavior-analytic and cover the practices in the BACB's Supervisor Training Curriculum Outline, not just a course with the word 'supervision' in the title. Check your BACB portal history if you're not sure whether you supervised anyone this cycle. It's the record that decides, not your memory of it.
Does the January 1, 2027 change touch your numbers?
No. The BACB's next round of maintenance changes lands January 1, 2027, and it touches BCBAs, not BCaBAs: For BCBAs who supervised RBTs, BCaBAs, or trainees during the recertification cycle, the supervision requirement is 3 CEUs through December 31, 2026 and 4 CEUs beginning January 1, 2027. The BCaBA requirement doesn't move. The current handbook states the 2027 continuing education requirements for BCaBAs stay at 20 CEUs per cycle, with 4 in ethics and 3 in supervision, unchanged from what's been in place since 2022. The handbook gets updated on its own schedule outside that one change, so recheck it close to your recertification date rather than trusting a screenshot from last year.
What if you miss the deadline, or need a break?
Miss your recertification date and you're not locked out immediately. The handbook gives you 30 days from that date to reinstate and pay a $50 late fee before the certification lapses for good. The recertification application carries its own fee; the current amount is in the BACB fee table, not on this page. Neither fee buys you extra time on CEUs: those still have to be finished and logged before your recertification date, not during the grace window. If you need an actual break, longer than a grace period, the BACB has a voluntary inactive status that can run up to 4 years, with a $50 filing fee and its own CEU proration rules. Read the application requirements before you file; they're stricter than they look.
How do you log and prove your CEUs?
You self-report. Enter each CEU into your BACB portal account as soon as you have the certificate, and note the type: ethics, supervision, or general. Ethics CEUs cover the BACB's ethics requirements or, under the current handbook, events on cultural and contextual responsiveness, and most of the event has to focus there, not just touch on it in passing. Keep every certificate. The BACB doesn't return documentation once you submit it, and if a question ever comes up about what you logged, the certificate is what settles it, not your memory of the course.
