It's in your BACB portal account, not on this page. The BACB calls it your recertification date, and you'll find the same date in three places: your portal account, the public BACB Certificant Registry, and the certificate the BACB mailed you. Special Learning can't tell you what your date is; nobody outside the BACB can. What we can tell you is what that date does to your CEU count, and how to work backward from it once you've looked it up.
Where exactly do I look?
Log in to your BACB portal account. The BACB's own handbook describes the recertification date as something "BCBAs may locate in their BACB portal account, in the BACB Certificant Registry, and on their certificate." That's the account you created when you applied for certification, not a Special Learning login and not your CE provider's dashboard. If you've lost the password, use the BACB's account recovery, not a guess.
The same portal account is where you'll eventually file your recertification application, so it's worth confirming you can log in now rather than the week your date arrives. The BACB's account also carries a My Certification area, the same screen certificants use to print a verification letter of their status. Your certification information lives there too.
Can I find it anywhere besides the portal?
Yes. The BACB Certificant Registry is public: search your own name, and the record that comes back shows your certification status alongside your recertification date. It's the same registry an employer or funder would use to verify you, so it's a fast second check if you're locked out of your portal account.
Your paper certificate carries a date too, but treat the portal account as the one to trust first. It updates the moment anything changes on your record; a certificate mailed to you months or years ago does not. If a certificate and your portal ever disagree, the portal account is the current, authoritative record; go with that one and check with the BACB directly if the gap is confusing.
Why does this one date matter so much?
Every BCBA owes 32 CEUs inside each two-year recertification cycle, 4 of them in ethics, and 3 in supervision if you supervised RBTs, BCaBAs or trainees at any point in the cycle. That supervision number becomes 4 starting January 1, 2027. All 32 have to be earned by your recertification date. Nothing carries over: CEUs you finish early sit in that cycle and count for nothing in the next one.
Recertification is self-report with random audit. You attest that you met the requirement, the BACB audits a sample of certificants, and it can ask for your certificates later. Keep every one you earn, no matter how small the course, whatever your deadline turns out to be once you've looked it up.
How do I count backward once I know the date?
Once you have the date, subtract today's date from it and you know your runway. If it's close, say your date is around three months out, that's roughly twelve weeks to close whatever gap sits between what you've already logged and 32. If you haven't logged anything yet, twelve weeks against 32 CEUs is a little under three CEUs a week, and ethics and supervision (if it applies to you) should come first since those subtypes have to be there specifically, not just folded into the general total.
One more marker worth knowing: the recertification application itself doesn't open in your portal account until 45 days before your recertification date, per the BACB's own handbook. So at the three-month mark you're not filing anything yet. You're still in CEU-logging time.
My date is closer than I thought. What now?
Stop reading and go log what you've already completed into your BACB portal account, today, so your real gap is accurate instead of estimated. Then work the required subtypes first: 4 ethics CEUs, 3 supervision CEUs if you supervised anyone this cycle, and the rest as general CEUs from a BACB Authorized Continuing Education provider.
If you miss the date entirely, the BACB's handbook gives you a 30-day reinstatement window from your recertification date to pay a late fee and reinstate, and you cannot accrue additional CEUs during that window. Past that, you lose the certification and have to reapply under whatever eligibility rules are current then. That's the ceiling you're working against, not a plan; the plan is to not need it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my BCBA certification expiration date the same thing as my recertification date?
Yes, they're the same date. The BACB's own materials use "recertification date": it's the final day of your two-year cycle and the date by which all 32 CEUs have to be earned and your renewal filed.
Can Special Learning or any other CE provider tell me my expiration date?
No. Nobody outside the BACB holds that record, including us. We can sell you CEUs and tell you how the requirement works, but your date is only on file with the BACB, in your portal account, the Certificant Registry, and your certificate.
Does the public BACB Certificant Registry actually show my expiration date?
Yes. Search your own name in the registry and the record includes your certification status and recertification date, the same information an employer checking your credential would see.
What happens if I miss my recertification date?
Per the BACB's handbook, you get 30 days from your recertification date to reinstate and pay a late fee, with no additional CEUs accruable during that window. After 30 days you lose the certification and have to reapply under whatever eligibility rules apply at that point.
I'm on voluntary inactive status. Does that change my date?
It pauses your cycle rather than erasing it. The BACB's handbook says a certificant can stay on voluntary inactive status for up to four years, and your recertification date resumes counting from when you return. The handbook governs the exact conditions to come back, so check it directly before you plan around this.
How early can I actually submit my recertification application?
The BACB's handbook says the application becomes available in your portal account 45 days before your recertification date, not sooner. Before that window opens, your job is logging CEUs, not filing anything.
